‘Whelmed’ really means ‘capsized’ - the over and under were added later for effect. But you can be consolate: consoled and comforted. And gruntled too.

Dual-use technologies like GPS & Starlink are subject to EAR & ITAR. If SpaceX hadn't shut off Starlink, they would have (arguably) been in violation of US law by allowing weaponization of dual-use technology intended for civilian use. Just like GPS units turn off above 600m/s AND/OR set altitude

The back of this photo says “Pulley’s cat. July 1956”. ❤️
Black and white photo of a shorthaired white and tabby cat approaching the camera with tail raised up in a friendly greeting. For some reason there are two dark regions on the photo, on either side of the cat, as if there were fingers over the lens or it was peering through a crooked fence.

No. This "fact" is a fairly common misunderstanding of what the stat is measuring. First, there is no "a photon" that is making a trip from the core to the outer layer. Photons are absorbed, emitted, reabsorbed, then re-emitted over & over again by the sun's plasma. 1/2

As someone who has audited projects, built stuff (mostly robots & some toy software) + spends her time reading sci/tech history, this is completely understandable. When projects move fast, the obvious sometimes slips. Sometimes to disastrous results; like people burning alive in a flame in 16psi O2

Honestly, if there's going to be one thing out of the cloud app experiment that takes root, I hope this is it. Giving users the power to craft their own algorithms and then share it with other users is incredibly powerful. We already do UGC. Why can't we do UGA/UGR?

It is fascinating how intricate some of these practises are. Before any anatomist discovered Central Pattern Generators (CPGs) in the spinal cord that continue messaging after death; Japanese fishers were killing CPGs to postpone rigor mortis.

A counter argument: libraries are safe spaces that do not charge you money to be there. Librarians help those without access to the web to apply for jobs and housing, provide access to accurate information without payment, including physical or e- or audiobooks.

I'm surprised that Nature's editors would possess such a fundamental misunderstanding. FWIW, these algorithms really do "learn" (for some value of learn) from their inputs. The inputs themselves aren't stored anywhere. They don't mash the inputs together. They do real-time synthesis.

Yes, the picture is really funny, but it's also extremely tragic. Many of these children would die before 18. The rest... ≥75% of them would develop black lung & die before their 30s. I am not saying this to be a scold. Just as a reminder that there's a reason why we changed the things we did.
A photo from the book, Breaker Boys — How a Photograph Helped End Child Labor. It talks about the person who took these photographs and their motivations. Two additional photographs of child miners are there. They lack any joy.

Sugi trees are amazing for construction. Their wood is easy to work w/ using primitive tools + is waterproof, decay-resistant & easy to transport. In medieval Japan, Sugi demand quickly outpaced supply, leading to the creation of Daisugi; sustainable cultivation turned into art.
The image shows Sugi trees on which daisugi has been performed. Branches have been trimmed in such a way that the tree grows in a straight, narrow way. The image has trees of different colors & is aesthetically pleasing.

In 2019, a certain someone made the claim that neuralink could "solve" autism, schizophrenia, depression etc. This claim is so fantastical that it's advanced science fiction. Crewed missions to Jupiter & Saturn will be routine before we even come close to solving these conditions with BCIs. 1/n
Musk envisions both disabled and healthy individuals swiftly getting surgical implants at local centers. These devices aim to cure a range of conditions from obesity, autism, depression and schizophrenia, and to enabling web browsing and telepathy.
