Putting this here as a reminder to myself. Really want to read The Strangers by Naomi Alderman.

Ha! I've been in primary care parent/school run chic since the mid 2010s. Getting harder and harder to justify

By the time you reach your 40s, every thought has a hinge. Maybe I'll start dressing well, you'll think to yourself and immediately will come the refrain: To what end?

Walliams had to conduct a decades long campaign of, at best, legally dubious sexual terror necessitating the establishment of the world's loudest whisper network to get his books recalled; Rooney just had to oppose a genocide.

Faber refusing to distribute Sally Rooney's novels is exactly the sort of reductio ad absurdum that in a sane world would lead to a massive clamour for the Palestine Action prohibition to be overturned.

Bones and All is on iPlayer. Is it Luca Guadagnino's best film? Not for me to say

(Really this thread is aimed at the Big Five CEO reading my Bluesky posts on a Saturday morning, ideally after a sleepless night hosting three ghosts.)

To be clear, because I'm shooting from the hip: if your workload has been tripled through e.g. staffing cuts and you're under pressure via company directives to use an LLM, you have my sympathy. If you're issuing the directives, you're an enemy to readers and writers.

I truly do believe this: the only sustainable (never mind ethical) stance on using AI is zero tolerance.

In an increasingly post-literate age, the real job of publishers, big five et al, is building and sustaining a literary culture. If you can't see how incorporating AI into any process, internal or public-facing, is anathema to that, find a new sector to [not] work in. www.wired.com/story/book-p...

Book Publishers Are Quietly Using More AI. Staff Are Revolting
Workers at three major publishing houses tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.

Ironically, this was inspired by some paint that claimed to be anti-climb but was actually on the fence.

Apropos private thoughts, I wish people understood that "Jews disagree" is not the gotcha or breaking news they think it is.

The world can feel like an intolerant place so it's worth remembering that most paint is *pro* climb

Reading the Premier League statement and it seems like the only thing Man City are guilty of is fraud at an industrial scale. So if that's a crime, sure, throw the book at them.

He's one of the richest men in entertainment, could be at home enjoying his wealth, but no, he's out there tirelessly, travelling the world to support those less fortunate because it's important to give something back.

Rowan Atkinson is rightfully heralded for his comedic acting but remains unappreciated for his charity work. All those hours of sitting for street caricaturists ? Totally pro bono.

Good night's sleep. Squashed three mosquitos before bed but, crucially, left one alive to tell its friends what it had seen.

There is no greater theory of mind breakdown than the discrepancy between how I imagine my friends' faces as they reply with the crying laughing emoji and my knowledge of my own face when I deploy it.

It cost two zloty to use the toilets at Auschwitz: no zloty, no potty. A tour guide once told me a story about going with a survivor who, on learning this, rolled up his sleeve and told the attendant 'Last time I was here, we didn't have to pay.'

Blue Heron (on Mubi). Deeply affecting and formally inventive, two modes that seem at first to be pulling in opposite directions, as if to tell the story straight is too much for the filmmaker to confront. But the third act throws that concern out the window. Really good on the texture of memory. 4*

Not to be all The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas but someone needs to keep breaking Beck's heart every twelve years so we can keep getting new sad Beck albums.

If you a) appreciate the nicheness of this reference and b) have kept up with their output post, let's say, 2012, please do direct me any "new" albums worth getting to know.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot might have something to say about it but all these years later I think we can mostly agree Wilco were right that they are equal to or less than A Ghost Is Born.

It's so great, right? I'm constantly being hung up on the idea that "immediacy is the negation of mediation", which has me noticing the various forms of mediation that I'd not noticed previously, and realizing all the good stuff in life comes out of a mediation process.

On Falling (currently on iPlayer) is so good on the isolating effects of modern labour, the cost to our humanity and the degree to which we are all now serfs. Highly recommend

Story two: speculative fiction from Nigel Farage (aged 62 and 3/4s) entitled Here's What I'll Do If My Party Wins the election. Go home, auntie, you're drunk/cheering on fascism again.

Someone should invent a Dime bar with two strips of caramel and call it a Caramellogram.
