Apropos private thoughts, I wish people understood that "Jews disagree" is not the gotcha or breaking news they think it is.

(scolding Lionel Hutz voice) “There’s industrial scale fraud” (cheery Lionel Hutz voice) “and there’s industrial scale fraud!”

Reading the Premier League statement and it seems like the only thing Man City are guilty of is fraud at an industrial scale. So if that's a crime, sure, throw the book at them.

Rowan Atkinson is rightfully heralded for his comedic acting but remains unappreciated for his charity work. All those hours of sitting for street caricaturists ? Totally pro bono.

Good night's sleep. Squashed three mosquitos before bed but, crucially, left one alive to tell its friends what it had seen.

Hard to consider yourself your own harshest critic when you've published some books and Goodreads exists.

There is no greater theory of mind breakdown than the discrepancy between how I imagine my friends' faces as they reply with the crying laughing emoji and my knowledge of my own face when I deploy it.

It cost two zloty to use the toilets at Auschwitz: no zloty, no potty. A tour guide once told me a story about going with a survivor who, on learning this, rolled up his sleeve and told the attendant 'Last time I was here, we didn't have to pay.'

Blue Heron (on Mubi). Deeply affecting and formally inventive, two modes that seem at first to be pulling in opposite directions, as if to tell the story straight is too much for the filmmaker to confront. But the third act throws that concern out the window. Really good on the texture of memory. 4*

Not to be all The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas but someone needs to keep breaking Beck's heart every twelve years so we can keep getting new sad Beck albums.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot might have something to say about it but all these years later I think we can mostly agree Wilco were right that they are equal to or less than A Ghost Is Born.

It's so great, right? I'm constantly being hung up on the idea that "immediacy is the negation of mediation", which has me noticing the various forms of mediation that I'd not noticed previously, and realizing all the good stuff in life comes out of a mediation process.

On Falling (currently on iPlayer) is so good on the isolating effects of modern labour, the cost to our humanity and the degree to which we are all now serfs. Highly recommend

BBC news headlines just now. Story one: Reform found guilty of breaking donation rules. One (1) comment from editor of The Spectator: an opportunity for them to professionalise/fall in line with the "sensible voices" in the party.

It would be reductive to call this a Jewish Sopranos, but that's how good it is, and it might make someone pick it up.

Watched Groundhog Day with the 9-year-old (big hit). Previously thought of it as a film about stasis, the lure of depression, the promise of renewal and the necessary difficulty of real inner change, but this time is seemed like a study on the psychic damage of having to continually wake up at 6am.

On the one hand, the turn of the century was yesterday, it's the long summer after school ends and I'm still barely out my teens, and on the other Jack Wilshere is now manager of Luton.

I'm seriously concerned reading a second day of tributes and realising she was involved in basically every social, cultural and scientific advancement of the last 50 years that she was the one thing holding us together. Thought I knew what a legend she was but I didn't know the half of it.

Any excuse to share this. Art Spiegelman once gave the greatest response to an interview question you'll ever hear. When asked if he thought a comic book about Auschwitz was in poor taste: "I thought Auschwitz was in poor taste."

Do you know what's really nice? When you see a kid in a film and they're really good and they go on to have a brilliant career, constantly challenging themselves and confounding expectations. This is in ref to Will Poulter, who I've had a soft spot for since Son of Rambow. Just a lovely thing to see

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

This is appalling and tragic. Cambridge University, the media, and those far right 'scholars' and hangers on who sought to capitalise on this case for social media clout surely bear responsibility for what feels like an entirely predictable outcome. www.lbc.co.uk/article/jaso...

It's good, I think, every couple of years to pick up a book everyone is raving about, read a few pages then quietly and respectfully return it to the library box it came from having concluded, with enormous restraint and magnanimity, that you are not the target readership.

Dooneen by @rid9way.bsky.social is such a special book. Makes most modern fiction seem anemic in comparison. It's completely inimical, but I think Christian Petzold's adaptation of Transit by Anna Seghers (another masterpiece) would make a good companion piece. Anyway, the point is: read it.

Second viewing of Marty Supreme. I can't tell you how moving it is to see a deeply flawed Jewish character, who faces, historically, what are only homeopathic levels of persecution, get to the end and decide "Nope, I've absolutely had enough of this antisemitic bullshit." A masterpiece.

Couldn't agree more. The amount we're getting is an insult. 91% take-up because we'll never see another penny from these thieves and we can't afford not to, but if you'd have offered us 10x to help build the illiteracy engine, 91% of us would've told you to go fuck yourself.

It's nice to be wrong about things. I didn't like the first two episodes but The Comeback S3 is really, really good, and Lisa Kudrow's central turn remains an all-timer.
