The scariest bug in production? Accidentally exposing sensitive data! Don't just hope you filtered your objects. Enforce it at the type level! Here's how TypeScript's Pick utility type acts as your security guard. It lets you create a "safelist" of properties.
image is a screenshot of code and this is the code
interface User {
  id: number;
  name: string;
  email: string;
  passwordHash: string;
  createdAt: Date;
  updatedAt: Date;
  isAdmin: boolean;
}

/*
  We will use Pick to define our safely exposed user data and prevent
  accidental exposure of sensitive fields.
  No sensitive fields are exposed like passwordHash or isAdmin.
*/

type PublicUser = Pick<User, 'id' | 'name' | 'email'>;
function getPublicUsers(db: { user: User[] }): PublicUser[] {
  return db.users.map(user => ({
    id: user.id,
    name: user.name,
    email: user.email,
    // TRYING TO GET DATA THAT COULD POTENTIALLY BE EXPOSED?
    passwordHash: user.passwordHash, // ❌ TypeScript ERROR - not in the Pick type!
    isAdmin: user.isAdmin, // ❌ TypeScript ERROR - not in the Pick type!
  }));
}

I'm still using vscode. I've tried other editors, like cursor or zed but I'm a fan of the minimal settings I have. plus, there's the power of familiarity + the extensions I use. roe.dev/ama #ama
are you still using VSCode or you moved to Cursor ?

Solved a super tricky bug yesterday. - While dev runs on Node 18, prod runs on Node 16 due to some Ubuntu compat issues. - I wrote a feature using fetch (native), and it broke in prod as fetch was undefined. - Imported node-fetch to solve this bug, and a GET req started failing.

Happy Mother’s Day to anyone who’s ever been a mom or mom-figure! The world needs 14 clones of you but until we find a way to do that ethically, I hope every day of your life is filled with beautiful moments where ppl show you how very much you’re appreciated & tell you that your booty is growing 😏

A big surprise for me on becoming an adult was realizing that empathy (seeing things from other people’s perspective) and understanding cause & effect (if I do X, the natural consequence is Y) did not come naturally for many people. I still wonder if these gaps are a nature or nurture problem.

Watching Squid Game Season 2 made me SO mad - and also helped cement the decision to stop watching series altogether. It’s a good series… deliberately unfinished. Made me realize I needn’t waste hours of my time watching something designed to simply be a trailer for the next season

Squid Game S2, bravo! Now, that’s how you extend the story of a character who has already had a complete arc, without diminishing the earlier arc. Great show, can’t wait for the next season.

Christmas often makes me reflect on America as a “nation of immigrants.” The holiday centers on family, and as immigrants, we sacrifice being with loved ones back home for the promise of a better life here. This sacrifice self selects for people with drive. Merry Christmas to all! 🎄 .

The DOJ requested that Google to sell Chrome, end default search deals, share its index with rivals, and potentially sell Android to remedy its search monopoly. Google’s counter-proposed that its search deals with Apple and others don’t need to be exclusive, allowing Apple to partner with Bing. 🙃

Spent my whole week building a translation pipeline for some documentation that ingests `readme.md` files in English, passes them to gpt-4o and receives the translated versions, then writing them to disk. Very interesting and enlightening, my first use of the OpenAI APIs.

I can bring guidance, answer questions, offer help but I can't bring your will power and dedication. Some things have to come from you. If you don't bring those two things, no amount of help or support can make up for it.

Realizing the hard way that writing a package in @deno.land and publishing to jsr, while a seamless and lovely experience, effectively locks out 80% of the potential users for said package. Even the project I’m building which inspired me writing it for myself, is Nest JS with TS, so CJS. 🤦🏾‍♂️

I tried all the Node JS Paystack packages, and none was built using TS, so there was zero IDE intellisense. As a result, I’m building an open source package using Typescript, wrapping the Paystack (paystack.com) API. Their docs are so good that it feels like I’m just copying them into Typescript.

In 10 years: - AI might be popular in some consumer-facing products, but it'll be INSANELY common inside businesses - You'll still probably be writing/reviewing code - But you'll also be engineering prompts In other words, the AI revolution will be boring.

Another tip for Bluesky newbies - no, it's not as fast-paced here, immediate engagement - here, YOU are the algorithm so you need to engage! Post, comment, re-post others, follow lots to start with - engagement is the key to traction and interaction here. Be proactive, not passive. Well worth it!
