It was so fun to see WWB contributor Chi-Young Kim in today's NYPL Book of the Day feature! WHALE by Cheon Myeong-kwan (tr. Chi-Young Kim) was published in 2023 by @archipelagobooks.bsky.social . Tobias Carroll featured it in one of his Watchlists for WWB, too. view.email.nypl.org?vawpToken=KP...
Today's Book of the Day is a wild, multi-generational fable.

Whale
Cheon Myeong-kwan

Set in 1950s Jeju, Whale follows three mythical women: ambitious Geumbok, obsessed with a whale; her mute daughter Chunhui, who speaks to elephants; and a woman who controls bees with a whistle.

I'll tell you something else deeply meaningful to me today: @archipelagobooks.bsky.social is publishing Sevgi Soysal's "Walking." It's the first translation I've sponsored, something I've wanted to do for a long time. When I read Soysal's "Dawn," I knew I wanted to see her other work in print.

Matrilineage

One is mayhemed
into threads, another weaves
a mesh, a third collects.

One tallies years
on her wrists, another
bends the bars, a third exits.

One tucks a thorn
under her tongue, another
grows a throat, a third insists.

One bites the fist
that gags her mouth, another
swallows teeth. A third hawks.
Speaks.
