F for Fun Fact. Floronia bucculenta is the only UK native spider who's scientific name starts with F (I hope!) F is the Feather Legged spiders, Uloborus plumipes (pic) Usually found in garden centres. Uloborus walckenaerius, found only at a few S.Eng sites. #Arachtober @britishspiders.bsky.social

#Aractober day 5 is E for Ero. Often referred to as pirate spiders due to the habit of invading the webs of other spiders where they prey on the occupant. E furcata/Cambridge I have two abdomen tubercles. E tuberculata/aphana have four. The egg sacks are also quite distinctive.

Dysdera, the woodlouse spiders. #Aractober. Also know as the Baked Bean spider 😁D.erythrina and D.crocata, the one you will most likely come across. The large chelicerae and bright orange/red colour make them very distinctive. @britishspiders.bsky.social

#Aractober Decided to feature two C's today with plenty to choose from. A cute jumping spider Calositticus inexpectus. Also a tiny 1-2mm spider that spins webs less than 8mm in size. You will only find it in a few garden centres and botanic gardens, Coleosoma floridanum.

Badumna longinqua for today's A-Z. New to the UK and probably spreading through plant trade. Check out your local garden centre, B+Q and especially B+M stores outdoor plant areas. You will likely find the distinctive web before any spider. Visit the BAS on YouTube for more info. #Aractober

#Aractober Didn't participate last year due to circumstances. Usually I challenge myself and daily find a different spider to post. Not practical this year so going for an A-Z challenge. Easy to start Araneus diadematus, Garden Spider. Lots of gravid females this time of year. Comment your A

Some spiders from the last few days. Anypheana numida, Liocranum rupicola the Pied Stone spider and Parasteatoda spiderlings, P.tepidariorum? Also possible new site for what is likely Helpis. For size it has a small fruit fly. @britishspiders.bsky.social @tylanberry.bsky.social @sewbrec.org.uk

Seems to be Spitting spider season (check out the BAS Atlas). Indoors this time. Not unusual for me to see two or three over a week or so and then nothing for months, or even until the next year. @britishspiders.bsky.social

A carefully suspended and disguised egg sack constructed by Cryptachaea blattea. A introduced species that's gradually becoming wide spread since being first recorded in 2011. @britishspiders.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk

A little search around the garden produced this female Spitting spider, Scytodes thoracica, keeping care of her eggs. This is one of our six eyed spiders and has an unmistakable shape. Uncommon but S.Wales is one of the regions you can find it @britishspiders.bsky.social @sewbrec.org.uk

A very messy Nigma puella Bleeding heart spider retreat with multiple egg sacks. Have seen females at times mostly green or even redish in colour rather than the typical white. @britishspiders.bsky.social

Anyphaena numida one of the not so common buzzing spiders. It's juv. but feeling confident! I first recorded (2) in Aug 2022 Penarth, think the first Welsh record. This one yesterday was from a few miles away in Cogan and only the 2nd time I have seen it. @britishspiders.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk

The grass/stone bank line produced lots of spider igloos under the stones near areas with ant activity Zodarion fuscum. Most igloos had egg sacks, some were being used by imm. salticus. Recorded here previously, the third different location I have come across it locally. @britishspiders.bsky.social

Able to photograph H.pluchei and her spiderlings that emerged yesterday. Lots of eyes and legs! Certainly a nightmare for anyone who is arachnophobic. Recorded in Britain since 2004 and looks to be now established at a new site in #Wales @britishspiders.bsky.social @sewbrec.org.uk @cofnod.org.uk

Neottiura bimaculata, Cream-backed Comb-footed spider. Just the one British species but considered regionally abundant. I rarely see it, usually in gardens, and still yet to find a male. This one is carrying her carefully made egg sack and safely released. @britishspiders.bsky.social

Found it difficult to get pictures of this 1-2mm Theridiidae. Coleosoma floridanum a tropical glasshouse species in the UK and ant mimic. Lots of mature males/females. Appears to be a first record for #Wales with only a few in the UK. @britishspiders.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk @sewbrec.org.uk

Visit to a garden centre I haven't looked around in before produced two Marpissa muscosa and a Holocnemus pluchei. I know not many records in my VC41 for either. Went to check but the BAS ATLAS has an 'elasticsearch' error. @britishspiders.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk @sewbrec.org.uk

At a friend's house yesterday and pleased to find a rubbish spider. More like rubbish pics tbh! Cyclosa conica or Trash Line spider. Wikipedia says it has no common name if anyone wants to update it. This one is the regular var. if the others are still recognised as so. @britishspiders.bsky.social

A spider worth looking out for at your local garden centre. Holocnemus pluchei the Marbled Cellar Spider. Very different in appearance from the common Pholcus phalangioides. Pos' a population locally as multiple spiders of various sexes. Would you say sub adult pictured? @britishspiders.bsky.social

Agreed. Not 1700's, also no spiders, but I have a 1912 (1st 1887)edition of The Young Collector - Ants,Bees,Dragon-Flies,Earwigs,Crickets, and Flies. The writing style is great. Particularly like the section on Pulex irritans. "Familiar to every one" sounds so casual and everyday but also personal.

Any suggestions? Best photo I have with this 2mm liny'. Simply not clear enough for me to ID. Woodland habitat, reddish legs. Hopefully someone can recognise the mantis shape. If not will keep for it for when I have better scope. Ta @britishspiders.bsky.social @tylanberry.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk
