this one took a very long time because I had to place every individual feather and accessories don't always sit right. there is some infernal geometry if you look at it too close

Can you explain REJECTION SENSITIVITY?

Rejection sensitivity (sometimes called rejection sensitive dysphoria)³ is generally defined as a person’s tendency to anxiously expect, readily perceive, and intensely react to rejection or criticism. It manifests as extreme emotional sensitivity and (very, very real) emotional pain triggered by the perception by the person with ADHD that they have

• been rejected,
• been teased,
• been criticized,
• disappointed important people in their lives, or
• failed to attain their own standards or goals.⁴

➔ What are some common symptoms of RSD?

• Difficulties maintaining relationships
• Withdrawing from social situations
• Isolating yourself

While rejection sensitivity isn’t a specific diagnosis (nor is it specific to ADHD), it IS an observable phenomenon in up to 95 percent of people with ADHD. About a third of people who experience rejection sensitivity name it as the most impairing aspect of their ADHD—and that’s a big deal.

When I first learned about rejection sensitivity, I read this quote in an article by Dr. William Dodson that literally changed how I thought about myself in an instant. (Dr. Dodson is a board-certified adult psychiatrist who has specialized in adults with ADHD for the last twenty-five years. In particular, his work on rejection sensitivity has made him a leader in the field of ADHD research.)

I cannot fathom a better way of writing this, so here is Dr. Dodson’s quote in its entirety. I beg you to read this:

“To some degree or another, most people with RSD become people pleasers. They quickly scan every person they meet and have a remarkable ability to figure out exactly what that person would admire or praise. They then present that very pleasing false self to the world. They are so intent on avoiding the possibility of displeasure from others and keeping everyone happy that they often lose track of their own goals and desires. By the time they get to their forties, they have built up a huge well of resentment about having given up their own lives to attend to the perceived needs of everyone else and getting nothing in return.”

The other most common way of protecting oneself from the extreme pain of RSD is to give up trying anything new unless one is assured of quick and complete success. The notion of trying and failing or being turned down is just too painful to risk. They don’t go on dates. They don’t apply for jobs. They don’t speak in meetings or make their ideas and needs known to anyone.

I’d never even HEARD of rejection sensitivity before that moment. Imagine how many undiagnosed people with ADHD haven’t either. Flaming-hot take that might get me canceled: RSD is a learned behavior and can therefore be unlearned. Laura Mears-Reynolds, host of the ADHD AF podcast, calls RSD “Really Shit Daydreams,” and I think that’s an excellent way to contextualize what RSD really is—lies your brain tells you, and we have to learn to recognize them as such.

I'm not sure I would call hitting the towers "badass" now though. I saw the plane hit the second tower live because I was up for class. the rest of the day was surreal, with screaming girls because we were at the other end of the state but a lot of us were from around NYC and couldn't call home
