I love a good genre comedy, but too often both the makers and audience assume that "comedy" means it's above critique, and that anyone who does so somehow isn't aware it's a comedy. I still see a lot of people do this with "Lake Placid", even though my biggest gripe is that I didn't find it funny.

There is an ungodly amount of mugging in modern movies, made worse when actors realize they're in genre comedies and decide that gives them an excuse to chew the scenery in a way that's neither clever nor amusing. And of course audiences call it "camp", so that absolves it from criticism. 🙄

"Humans are evil" is a stupid trope that writers still keep using, not just because it's insufferably cliche but because it's born out of white male capitalists wanting to absolve themselves of guilt. It's easier to believe "humans are inherently destructive" instead of owning up to your own wrongs.

Reading the summary, this basically sounds like "Don't Look Up" but way more convoluted. Sure is great how the wealthy elite make parables for how humanity's self-destruction is entirely deserved because of the greed of the rich and powerful. Why bother with actual accountability?
