Honouring the legacy of Margaret Hamilton, the pioneer who coined the term “software engineering.” Her brilliant priority-driven software helped keep the Apollo 11 computer running through critical overloads during its final descent, helping land humanity safely on the Moon. RIP.

The "double square" is much less well-known than the "double diamond" methodology, but much more frequently practiced
Two-step process labeled the double square method: 1. The PM has an idea. 2. The engineers build it.

Most of the harm IMO happened when specialized technology teams - like web frontend teams - were established, along with ivory tower architects pursuing SOA principles, trying to harmonize data structures across different domains.

After dealing extensively with legacy COBOL systems, I've come to really appreciate what developers have achieved back then. Many of those systems had well done boundaries, which suggests the developers had a deep understanding of their business domain.

The music industry still sells physical media (vinyl) for enthusiasts and collectors, who are willing to pay the extra cost. I always expected the game industry to follow suit. Disappointing move by Sony.

Yes, there is a widespread superstition that air conditioning makes people sick. And people with air conditioning at home are labeled as Umweltsau ("environmental pig") here in Germany. It's a shame that schools and kindergartens here are not prepared for this kind of heatwave.

In German "dumm" never had a different meaning than "stupid, foolish". I read somewhere that modern English usage of the word "dumb" was influenced by German immigrants as well. Language is constantly changing. 🤷

Waterfall vs. Agile vs. AI development methodologies, illustrated through vehicle-building analogies.
Three rows show how each approach delivers value across four stages:
	•	Waterfall: Builds components sequentially toward a final product — a tire, then an axle, then a chassis, then a complete car. Nothing usable until the end.
	•	Agile: Delivers working, incrementally better transportation at each stage — a skateboard, scooter, bicycle, motorcycle, then a car. Always something functional.
	•	AI: Starts with an over-engineered, chaotic “Homer Simpson car” — a wild, impractical contraption — then progressively refines it into a normal, polished car. Begins too complex and simplifies toward usability.

Does it make an ethical difference if it's engineering instead of art?
000
Andreas Pinhammer @apinhamm.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
There's a lot of debate about the ethical use of #AI in graphic design and music, but it's comparatively quiet when it comes to AI in software development. Does that mean that, in the "is #programming art or craft?" discussion, the craft side has won?

Today I realized that a contract is just a model of the world expressed in natural language. Modeling contracts in software means creating a model of an imperfect model of reality. 🤯 A contract is both a real object and a model of reality. #ddd

Not sure if justified, but I perceived Power Play (and its spin-off Video Games) as very Nintendo biased back in the day - which was a big affront for me as a Mega Drive kid 😄

Prompt engineering is the art of writing a prompt that gives me exactly the answer I desire — and postulating it as, "Oh, almighty AI has come to a conclusion." #ai #prompt

Dieter Rams - a German industrial designer - introduced his ten principles of good design in the late 70s. What amazes me is how well these principles can be applied to software design. My favourite one: good design is as little design as possible.

Bagged green tea tends to be bitter and harsh in taste. Try some Japanese loose leaf teas like Gyokuro. They taste much more pleasing IMO. If you prefer something in the middle between black and green tea, Oolong tea might be worth a try.

Software platforms in contrast should focus on supporting. And this support must be flexible, giving product teams just enough support to progress quickly.
000
Andreas Pinhammer @apinhamm.bsky.social · 01/03/2025
There is a common misconception about platforms as foundations. Foundations are static, need to be built in advance, and can't be easily changed. This misconception is especially widespread in upper management, enforcing teams to build a feature-rich platform before starting to work on products.

Maybe the insurance sector is particularly struggling to apply DDD principles because sharing (risks) is their business model and part of their DNA, so there is a trait to share everything. But sharing models doesn't work well for software development.
