The Iron Garden Sutra (Sui), because naturally I forgot the book I read close to its release date.

My kid, who is responsible for 98% of our family's cafe trips, actively avoids the places with AI music. It's as much of a dealbreaker as no wi-fi.

And when it gets to just be what it is. (This really came through with Lower Decks, I think, because for all the mockery and ridiculousness, every episode was very much a Star Trek episode.)

Yeah, Trek works best when it has space to breathe.

I often think of it as queer being the setting's demographic norm (fewer people are allo cis het monogamists than not). But I guess the baseline is queerness is not worthy of comment and not a focus of bigotry.

I appreciated the "we don't give a fuck, have some Muppets" energy. In part because Trek hasn't figured out how to do short seasons, and in part because dgaf is better than leaning into horror or fetch-quests.

This is like seeing Christmas decorations in September! (Both because your writing is good stuff in a neatly-wrapped package, and also because it feels like the season gets earlier every year.)

I feel like I encountered the word in a non-Pratchett context first (so probably either a TSR tie-in or a Greenberg-packaged anthology) but can't remember. Certainly Pratchett is in the mix and likely to be a touchstone.

There are a lot of issues with using a detector, which may or may not be mitigated by the detector chosen and the overall editorial process. Writers will take it as more or less of a red flag for a range of reasons, just like with the other flags on the Grinder.

040

A. P. Howell - Buy my book! @aphowell.com · 29/09/2026

IMHO, "feeds subs through a detector" merits a flag. I don't think it's up to the Grinder to differentiate between Pangram and something else. The market can make their process clear on their own site. (If a market *doesn't* disclose, IMHO that's worth delisting.)

Weighty, darker (in the drab-and-shadows sense, unrelated to alignment) deliberate. Still magic-as-science (repeatable, knowable to some extent) but feels more engineer than alchemy.

But I did start to go "definitely way earlier" for Deep Blue Sea, because I was thinking The Big Blue. In fairness to myself, a free diver with a dolphin friend is very similar to killer sharks created in the course of Alzheimer's research.

Certainly a more polished script than the fan-subbed versions that reached the US prior to 1999.

I love this comment thread as a reminder that 1999 was somehow an even better year for movies than I thought (and I thought it was pretty fucking excellent). Also I apparently need to watch Ravenous and But I'm a Cheerleader and (somehow? HS me was unimpressed by the book) The Thirteenth Warrior.

Me: Makes a list of reasonable work to do, including finishing the book that's been almost done for a while, making promo images for the released book, and prepping a couple shorts for reprinting. Also me: What if I dredge up a very old story and start sending it out?

I messed up distro settings so there is also a DRMed Kobo version floating around out there. Hopefully, that will be gone soon, because DRM is a pain and I hate it. It's not on Kobo Plus at the moment, though it will probably eventually end up there after I publish a couple more books.

I plan to have one or two new short stories up on itch-io before the end of the year, plus the space opera novel Graveyards of the Deep Dark. (Disclosure: I do use the Evil River for the novels as part of a wide release strategy, but not the shorts.)

It didn't even feel so much like a money grab (I have no idea how much money was in below-the-payment-threshold accounts, or how much they saved by folks cancelling) as it felt like they had no idea what they were doing. Except that they were clearly not instituting the fee for the reason stated.

They also kept money from closed accounts. Or at least, they kept the $3.50 I made in the Smashwords account that rolled over and I elected not to pay $12 to keep running. (Not the biggest red flag D2D has been hoisting by a long shot, but worth a separate derisive snort.)
