I really dislike submission calls that tell me all the guidelines I must follow up front otherwise my submission will be set on fire but then hide or don't tell me how much they are paying. Excuse you.

Every time they point to something impressive that generative AI has done, one of three things is invariably true: 1. It didn’t do it. 2. It’s not very impressive. 3. The real effort was actually done by one or more humans.

Tell me SOMEBODY has written a fantasy Casablanca homage about events in and around a "djinn joint." I will be terribly disappointed if they haven't (and then eagerly await someone filling that gap).

Discoverability for new SFF books seems way down these days, especially outside of bestsellers and certain subgenres. I'm noticing this as both a reader and a writer. Great stuff is in danger of sinking without a trace. Please post about new/recent books you love or are excited for!!! I'll start:

We need the language and the labels and the experiential frames of reference because those things are tools. Imagine trying to discuss, say, wage gap while only describing people as "people." No gender, no race, no disability, nothing but "people." It can't be done—you *need* the words.

Last re-skeet: I have a hard time concretizing for other people how often that's the case in so many spheres of identity and disability and queerness, etc.—one of the reasons people actively weaponize "I wish we had no labels!" is to rob us of the language and concepts we use to functionally exist.

I need to clarify something here: this is a physical, print collection that I’m looking to get back in actual physical print. If all an imprint is going to do with my book to give it second life is make it entirely digital and distribute it for free, that…sadly isn’t what I’m looking for, I’m sorry.

✨Let’s go, girls✨ I’m beyond thrilled to announce my next book, coming out this spring with @harpercollins.bsky.social BOTTLE BLONDE is a YA rom-com love letter to community, high school musical theatre, 2000s chick flicks and the magic of being true to yourself.
A light pink theatre curtain fills the background of the graphic in front of a sparkly bubblegum pink backdrop. In the middle of the screen, in a red marquee sign clipart, is the following deal announcement from Bookshelf:

Aly Day at HarperCollins has acquired BOTTLE BLONDE by Elle Grenier (THIS WRETCHED BEAUTY) at auction. A YA rom-com following a determined theater nerd who is sure the key to living out her picture-perfect senior year is landing her dream part as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde the Musical; obviously she’ll need to nail her audition, but first she needs to come out as a trans girl. Publication is set for May 2027; Alexandra Levick negotiated the two-book six-figure deal for North American rights.

A second marquee sign features the following text:
BOTTLE BLONDE by Elle Grenier
A HarperCollins production
Out May 18th 2027The same background as the last graphic. This time, the marquee sign features the following summary:

Amelia knows she was born to be a leading lady. But there’s just one thing: only one other person knows she’s a girl.

With only three and a half months until graduation, Amelia is determined to make her senior year dreams come true. And the key to living out her picture-perfect high school fantasy is landing the part of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde: The Musical. It would give Amelia the chance to play opposite her longtime crush—sensitive, mega-talented basketball star, Travis dos Santos. Travis, who always laughs at her jokes and makes space for her thoughts. Travis, who has started to look at her a bit differently.

But if she wants a real shot at her dream role, she has to come out as a trans girl.

Amelia is closer than ever to turning her main-character daydreams into reality, if only she could prove herself to the rest of the school. But finding her happily-ever-after might be more complicated than she thought—and her vibrant imagination might just carry her away this time.A take on the meme featuring a dark, gloomy beach house next to a pink, Barbie-like beach house. Above each house are the following titles (left to right): This Wretched Beauty (2026) / Bottle Blonde (2027)

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.
