The transport network is already struggling. But Brisbane’s plans for infill development are not matched with plans for infill transit. Population growth continues. Active and public transport infrastructure is stalled. Active transport socio-legal circumstances are getting worse.

AI, Cars, and Low Rise Sprawl share striking commonalities. - adoption by individuals is cheap - adoption en masse is expensive - they undermine human interactions - they are (becoming) entangled in society - the people they harm most defend them strongest - their resource drain is catastrophic

The new Queensland E mobility laws are a union of bad faith reasoning and incompetent implementation. A terrible piece of legislation. From a minister out of touch with real world stakeholders and a government that is toxic to active and public transport. statements.qld.gov.au/statements/1...

…a former prime minister of Luxembourg who said: “We all know what to do, but we don’t know how to get re-elected once we have done it.” A depressingly fitting quote for public and active transport here in Queensland. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-05...

'Not a fringe hobby for inner-city weirdos': What's blocking bikes in cities?
Climate change, the cost-of-living crisis and healthy lifestyle goals should make active transport like cycling a no brainer. So why does Australia struggle to build a bike culture?

Why is the response to a fuel supply shortage to lower cost and keep demand sky high? We could reduce demand by funding states and councils that discount public transport, do pop-up bike lanes, reduce urban speed limits, etc. Long term we need fed funds for big public transit infrastructure

Living in a city with a bimodal debate between low and high‑density is maddening. Cities and their people are diverse. That means we need a mix of housing types and a distribution along with amenities to meet those diverse preferences while getting the best community outcomes at a population scale.

This is pretty cutting on a day our public transport network is completely overwhelmed. Brisbane needs to be a lot smarter with what it’s got. It also needs to be a lot more ambitious with what it builds.

Widespread rail maintenance coinciding with a fuel price spike. Here’s the result. If only we had a complementary high capacity transport network so there was a level of intentional redundancy built into our public transit. www.reddit.com/r/brisbane/s...

If you want to ride the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail on an e-bike, do it before 1st of July. After that the speed limit for e-bikes will be 10km/h. If you are ambitious enough to do the end-to-end trail, it’ll need 16 hours of riding (plus stops) to complete.

Albanese telling people to reconsider driving is incredible optics. Mate, you built a country where driving is mandatory. A country where cyclists, pedestrians, and anyone not using a car is treated as a second-class citizen. Car-dependence is baked into every major policy you have architected.

If something like this is what you think of as an e-bike, then you don’t belong in any discussion about e-mobility.

When a country is attacked and then retaliates, how do we know whether to “condemn them in no uncertain terms” or to support their “right to defend themselves”. Maybe all aggressors be they nationalists, religious zealots, imperialists, or ethnic purists are the bad guys.

I’m no urbanist, but I still have frustrating interactions about cities. Me: Public transit infrastructure should be proactively planned alongside urban development to build a better city. Typical netizen from my town: transport should only ever be planned to address issues that already exist.

Add to this the cost of building sprawl vs improving density in existing areas. Building a greenfields suburb is a costly exercise for a far diminished quality of urban life.

I worry that Brisbane won’t get any extra public transport infrastructure for the 2032 Olympics. I worry as much that the short timeframe will lead to more wrong-thing-done-better projects that will undermine public opinion and make it even harder to deliver the mass transit actually needed.

People do what you pay them to do. You pay corporate executives to make stock prices go up, not to make better products. You pay politicians to get re-elected, not to govern well. You pay reporters to get a bigger audience, not to tell the truth. And so forth. Be aware of what you pay people to do

Warning; gross generalisation ahead! Australia’s nanny state culture seems to spring from a special blend of delight in reporting minor transgressions, delight in performing minor transgressions, and the startling ability to not do the right thing in any situation lacking an enforced rule.

As far as transport and transit go, the Brisbane 2032 plans are the most pathetic and underwhelming pile of garbage possible. More misuse of the term metro, a scale back of original plans, and nothing visionary or inspiring. We are getting LESS than we had planned before the games.
