Australia's draft Digital Duty of Care is "a welcome and necessary reform," but its public pitch as an off switch for 'the algorithm' misses the point, write Queensland University of Technology's Daniel Angus and Jean Burgess and Western Sydney University's Amanda Third.

Australia Wants an Off Switch for 'The Algorithm.' That's the Wrong Fix
Concerns about algorithms are real, but they are not the ‘bad guys’ in and of themselves, write Daniel Angus, Jean Burgess and Amanda Third.

I'm in the doctor's waiting room and being subjected to Australian commercial morning 'news' television. They are currently busy trotting out a range of sensational headlines for 'reactions' from a panel of unqualified commentators. I can feel my brain oozing out of my ears the longer I sit here

Chronological feed or opt-in algorithms are being floated as simple solutions to complex issues created by ad-driven social media platforms. In this @aunz.theconversation.com piece @antmandan.bsky.social and I present the nuances of social media feed tinyurl.com/3u5stk8s 1/2

Australians could soon be able to choose what appears in their social media feed. How would this work?
People should have meaningful choices about the systems organising their attention.

The Australian mainstream media's apoplectic reaction to Labor's milquetoast tweaks to negative gearing and CGT is the only proof required about how detached the media class is from ordinary Australians. And they wonder why trust in the news industry is collapsing.

I know it's coming from a positive place when someone says, shocked, "oh you rode a bicycle here?" but it just reveals how deep car brain runs in Australia. Yes, I travelled 4km, in fair weather, using one of the most common transport technologies in human history. I did not arrive by trebuchet.

Your daily reminder that the Brisbane City Council wants you to be 100% car dependent, with all the negative health, economic, and social consequences that brings. And their car centric worldview would rather victim blame pedestrians for being killed here than drop the speed limit to 40kph.
A cheap sign attached to a pole next to a pedestrian crossing at Kelvin Grove Rd outside QUT that says "busy traffic area, please use caution at this crossing"

Albanese telling people to reconsider driving is incredible optics. Mate, you built a country where driving is mandatory. A country where cyclists, pedestrians, and anyone not using a car is treated as a second-class citizen. Car-dependence is baked into every major policy you have architected.

OMG, Channel 9's are making the Winter Olympics unwatchable. They have played the same 4 ads on repeat around 100+ times in the last hour. As a result I am determined to never shop at a particular chemist, nor purchase insurance from a particular provider that has a fascination with lighthouses

The duality of speed skating and track cycling at the Olympics is well known, but what if we closed the gap further and had the short track speed skaters follow a souped-up Zamboni like the derny in a Kierin race? @kathangus.bsky.social reckons we could call it the 'Keirink' 🥌🚲

Really enjoying watching the Winter Olympics, but damn the Aussie-centric parochial production of Channel 9 is really trying its hardest to ruin it. Every Aussie athlete is seemingly getting a full over-produced biopic, and so much air time is wasted on commentators, just let us watch the action!
