I love my site visits and they are essential for giving our advice, but there is definitley something to be said for taking time getting to grips with a site rather than trying to squeeze 5 or 6 visits in one day! 😂 Honourable mention for Marrick Priory which we popped to as well!

Lovely day up in the @northyorkmoors.org.uk doing some more site inspections. A lovely breeze saved the day (along with an air conditioned off road veichle!)
A veiw across green trees and rolling hills, under bright blue skies with occasional clouds. Three uneven gravestones can be seen in the foreground. The remains of a stone built ring cairn protrude from green and brown heather vegetation on a hill top. In the distance a wide valley with fields and woodlands expands below the cairnLarge conical stone walkers cairn, sitting on top a prehistoric stone cairn, sat in green and brown heather. Sat under bright blue skies with occasional blue wispy clouds. The edge of the moor, bright green vegetation, with brown heather marking out thr line of a prehistoric earthwork. Blue skies above with hills and woodland in the distance

Somewhere in here, apparently, are a few hoofprints of Dartmoor's Bronze Age horses, amongst mainly cattle and sheep, on the base of the Saddlesborough reave ditch on Shaugh Moor. A 14C date of 1590±80 bc looks older than the currently accepted date range for the reaves - still can't get to 4500 BP!

Resilient Landscapes - applying archaeological survey and understanding to holistic Nature Recovery.
Fri 6 & Sat 7 November 2026. Memorial Hall, Pickering & the North York Moors National Park.

The Landscape Survey Group’s 2026 conference will combine a day of in-person presentations followed by a day visiting the North York Moors.

The conference will explore the growing role of landscape archaeology in shaping nature recovery, climate resilience and long-term land management. It seeks to bring together archaeologists, heritage/ecology/conservation professionals, land managers and community groups to consider how applied archaeological knowledge and investigation can help support better decision-making. At a time when environmental change is accelerating, this conference asks how the deep-time perspective of landscape archaeology can help shape more resilient futures. By reading the past carefully, we can act in ways that respect complexity, protect heritage, restore ecological value and strengthen the relationship between people and place.
Papers are sought on how archaeological evidence, historic landscape character, traditional land-use and community memory can all contribute to more integrated approaches to nature recovery. Focus will be placed on recent case studies where landscape archaeology has helped develop collaborative, landscape-level restoration and recovery strategies. Projects may include (but need not be restricted to) improving biodiversity, habitat creation or other landscape management work. Presentations should show how archaeological survey, including field observation and recording, aerial survey methodologies and local knowledge can reveal not only what survives, but how that understanding can support practical management, partnership working and wider public benefit.
To contribute a 20min paper or a poster, please send titles & abstracts (250 words max) to andrew.burn@historicengland.org.uk by 31 July.
