New in JACS! Using NMR, we show how condensates selectively bind and localize ions following the 'law of matching water affinities', shaping condensate composition, interface potential & RNA stability. Read about it here: doi.org/10.1021/jacs.5c07295 @irissmokers.bsky.social

Selective Ion Binding and Uptake Shape the Microenvironment of Biomolecular Condensates
Biomolecular condensates modulate various ion-dependent cellular processes and can regulate subcellular ion distributions by selective uptake of ions. To understand these processes, it is essential to...

My last three students at Illinois. Congratulations to Dr. Joel Roberts, Dr. Nafisa Ibrahim (co-advised by @jrl-electrochem.bsky.social), and Astarte Abbott. Three amazing students with a bright careers ahead!

In the nucleus, many intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) form condensates. What IDP sequence features drive this behavior? We developed CondenSeq, a high-throughput approach to measure nuclear condensate formation, and applied it to ~14,000 IDPs to find out! rdcu.be/eq975

(Longish thread. Apologies) I have met many inspiring colleagues over the past few months, many of whom are in academic institutions targeted by the current administration, and many others who are about to be (the analogy to the ‘eye of Sauron’ has been invoked many times; gallows humor). 1/

Introducing Mpipi-Recharged🔥🔥🔥 Our Mpipi coarse-grained model for biomolecular condensates now includes a pair-specific electrostatic potential that improves its predictions, including for challenging charged systems—all while still treating solvent and ions implicitly pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

Chemically Informed Coarse-Graining of Electrostatic Forces in Charge-Rich Biomolecular Condensates
Biomolecular condensates composed of highly charged biomolecules, such as DNA, RNA, chromatin, and nucleic-acid binding proteins, are ubiquitous in the cell nucleus. The biophysical properties of thes...

Cellular Function of a Biomolecular Condensate Is Determined by Its Ultrastructure
Biomolecular condensates play key roles in the spatiotemporal regulation of cellular processes. Yet, the relationship between atomic features and condensate function remains poorly understood. We stud...
