Vale, Al Dien (1927-2026): My fondest memory of him is from Dunhuang in 1998, when he went to a local beer festival and then came to us students (unannounced) with armloads of bottles. It was our job to drink the beer so he could remove the labels for his extensive collection 🍺

I checked Ha's 2022 book from the library to look for clues. Reading the acknowlegements is heartbreaking -- finishing the book during early COVID, watching the crackdown on Muslims in PRC from afar. Gracious thank yous to folks in China Studies, many Jews were clearly close friends & colleagues.
