responding sincerely to this even though i don't think you meant it that way. my answer is no, not really. or, well, not on its own in my universe of what paying respect to someone (in this case a woman, but anyone too) means (literally 'looking again' in latin).
i'm not saying expression of desire is bad, i get overwhelmed by it sometimes. being openly, joyfully desirous can be lovely. but there's a way of doing it narrowly which makes seeing another person about yourself, flattening them in the process. i don't want you not to want, but to want *bigger*.
a bigger wanting in your whole being that can coexist with another person's sovereignty instead of overriding it with your lust in a narrow, self-directed focus that makes someone a thing to possess. a wanting so big that you cannot contain it; so big it cannot be held by you for even a moment.
i want you to *see well*. i want you to see women and look again a second time (pay respect) and a third, past the point where your initial impression dissolves. i want you to attend to the women if your life for an uncomfortably long time, and come back to that attending again and again and again.
in seeing well i want you to be seeing what is put on offer for you her, seeing of her what she would endorse, and not just seeing what you wish to take from her. i want you to see in her what she would give you to hold with care and reverence and admiration.
and in loving well i want you to be unmade by her, and to suffer—truly suffer—in the realization that someone other than yourself is as real as you are. in loving well i want you to scream and laugh and cry in agonizing delight that there's someone real in front of you who you can never fully know.

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

I've considered seeking out a local women's bike group for safety. But the fact remains that a space that once felt like the place for an easy, safe and fun ride by myself at any time is now closed to me. It makes pursuing the hobby that much more inconvenient.

I haven't ridden my bike since about 10 months ago when I was on a local secluded bike trail and a man either catcalled me or was just singing a crude song. Either way I wasn't going to stick around to find out. It was the fastest I've ever ridden and also the last.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

DoorDash on Instagram: We messed up.
Our mistakes meant some NYC Dashers were underpaid or paid late. That's unacceptable, and we're deeply sorry to the Dashers we let down.
We've reached a settlement with the City of New York, and we will make this right by paying every impacted Dasher the amounts they are owed.

It isn't explicit, but we've seen this pattern before. 1) Black Americans are twice as likely to get Alzheimer's 2) Scientists want to study Black communities to figure out why and what insights this has for treatment/cause 3) Trump people cut the program, most likely because they think it's DEI.

Whether you call yourself a Socialist, a Communist, Anarchist, Marxist, Maoist, Trotskyite, eco-communalist, even you antifascist liberals - though we disagree on massive issues, I hope we can agree that we should always be caring for each other and building this world, no matter how bleak it gets.

The better world might just start as small pockets of freedom carved out from within. We saw windows of these with self-governing areas during the George Floyd uprisings and with the campus encampments for Palestine. We might see different kinds of pockets if Socialists keep winning elections here.

The project is extremely abstract at this time - it can feel like a million years away sometimes - and yet it manifests itself in the tiny acts of solidarity and defiance being taken every day. It manifests in the many works of fiction and nonfiction that inspire us constantly.

aU @anxiousutopian.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
But with my actions today comes a kind of faith (spirituality???) that they are contributing a single pebble at a time to this grand project that is "a better world".

On top of this outcome being dependent on the efforts of others who are not under my control - I hold the belief that the future is truly unknowable. An asteroid could come next year that ends the human experiment. Most likely, the future I will die in will be better in some ways and worse in others

The death of my naive optimism is not a bad thing - it has not turned me into a doomer. My optimism is now a responsible one. I still truly believe one day I will live to see a better world. In the same vein, I know there is no guarantee I actually will. This isn't a contradiction.

aU @anxiousutopian.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
For historical motivation, I used to frequently look to the "heroes" and movements from the 1960s in the US (they still did much in the face of terror and repression and have much to teach us) But now I tend to look to resistance to fascism in Europe between the 30s-40s more often (CNT, partisans)

aU @anxiousutopian.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
And as terrifying as that reality is, it grounds me in the truth that my local mutual aid work is actually more important today, not less. The impact might seem small when it isn't a part of a wave of a changing order, but the worsening conditions only make it more vital that we care for each other.
120
aU @anxiousutopian.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
But then I remember that actually, the time we are living in is much closer to the 30s-40s when it comes to environmental and economic crises, fascists rising to power, xenophobic and racial violence, genocide, etc.

aU @anxiousutopian.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Like, sometimes I'll read news and my brain flashes back to 4 years ago when I had this naive optimism that I and the rest of Gen Z were going to imminently bring about a wave of social change comparable to the 1960s and I freak the fuck out that things are not getting better and in fact worse.
100
aU @anxiousutopian.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Is it just me, or is it really easy to forget sometimes that mutual aid/social justice/organizing are actually MORE important than ever in terrible times like these, not less?
