This is bonkers but not surprising! Our own research in eastern North Carolina tells us that ocean and water front properties are a separate market and those buying such properties are willing to take on the risks.

With most current political leadership unable/unwilling to lead on this issue, I do not see managed retreat on the horizon where communities are centered in the process. We are on the path to 'unmanaged retreat' with the most vulnerable falling through the cracks.

Today, the U.S. faces one billion+ dollar climate/weather disaster on average every 2w. That's a massive increase from one every 4m in the 1980s. This is 'global weirding' and people are taking notice! The government told NOAA to stop tracking these events: but @climatecentral.org is on the job.

Carolina Consortium (carolinaconsortium.charlotte.edu) in the US does something similar. But organized efforts nationally is needed. US universities can be more aggressive & collectively flex their purchasing muscle to break these publishing monopolies & their exploitative model.
