So I've had a speaker drop-out last minute from the session dedicated to Old Norse female networks and communities! I still need to figure out next steps but is there coincidentally anyone who'd like to present in this session? #MedievalSky #OldNorse

It’s real! I just received my copy of Anglo-Norman Studies vol 48 which includes my article on the contribution of the abbey of Fécamp to the Norman invasion in 1066. Elisabeth van Houts’ article in vol 10 really inspired me, and I’m so pleased to have built on her work on the Ship List #MedievalSky

"A marvel is hard-won, if Gullmarn, remote from the corpses, saw the slain warriors [lit. slain of men] that the dispatcher of gold assembled for Þundr [Óðinn]." Preparing for an EAA presentation is a great excuse to bring out related skaldic poetry.

What a day... driving from Stockholm to Gothenburg, I stopped by my old colleagues' excacation of a Viking Age gravefield, visited the infamous Rök Runestone, and took a swim in Lake Vättern, which separates the ancient provinces of Westrogothia and Ostrogothia. A land of wonder!

Visited the fantastic Velanda Runestone this past weekend. An unusually late heathen monument, dated to c. 980–1015 AD (when Christianity seems to have had a firm grip on the Westrogothian elites), with an inscription that ends: ᚦᚢᚱ ᛬ ᚢᛁᚴᛁ, Þur uiki — "Thor bless".

I hate to be critical of fellow archaeologists — especially on Midsummer's Eve! — but in what way does two fairly small (0.5 m diameter) postholes located a whole 120 m apart empirically constitute anything resembling a structure or monument?

Ever heard of a duckhorse? Mallardhorse? 🐴🦆No? Well then, take a look at this 3D model I made of a medieval toy found in the Swedish town of Old Lödöse. It was excavated back in 1968, but only recently reinterpreted. Check it out here: skfb.ly/pKGtE 🏛⚱️

ENG: This wood object (registered as LM-PB-00001) was found in 1968 during an archaeological excavation in the medieval Swedish town of Old Lödöse. Originally it was interpreted as a handle, perhaps belonging to a piece of furniture, but it has now been reinterpreted as a possible child’s toy. The object creates a form of optical illusion: from some angles it looks like a bird (for example a mallard or duck, with an ornate neck, eyes and bill) and from others more like a horse (with a mane, ears, forelocks, eyes, and muzzle). - En medeltida leksak från Gamla Lödöse - Download Free 3D model by Lödöse museum (@lodosemuseum)
