There's been a lot of misinformation circulating regarding the Australian digital duty of care, particularly the 'sock puppet' provisions. @timothyjgraham.bsky.social and I provide this explainer of what these provisions actually mean. @qutdmrc.bsky.social theconversation.com/its-true-aus...

It’s true, Australia won’t ban ‘sock puppet’ accounts on social media. Here’s why
A ‘sock puppet’ online is a false identity deployed deceptively, but that’s not how researchers use them.

I'm in the doctor's waiting room and being subjected to Australian commercial morning 'news' television. They are currently busy trotting out a range of sensational headlines for 'reactions' from a panel of unqualified commentators. I can feel my brain oozing out of my ears the longer I sit here

Chronological feed or opt-in algorithms are being floated as simple solutions to complex issues created by ad-driven social media platforms. In this @aunz.theconversation.com piece @antmandan.bsky.social and I present the nuances of social media feed tinyurl.com/3u5stk8s 1/2

Australians could soon be able to choose what appears in their social media feed. How would this work?
People should have meaningful choices about the systems organising their attention.

For all the pathetic grandstanding by the government around the social media age ban, that we've heard nothing about restricting the use of this technology speaks volumes about how the former was a glorified publicity stunt while genuinely harmful technology rolls along unchecked.

It's no surprise that this cohort has drifted toward a new kind of conservatism. A hyper-individualised politics built around asset protection, tax minimisation, deregulation, and the moral elevation of personal wealth accumulation. We owe them no quarter.

It wraps together many of the worst instincts of late capitalism: unnecesary products/services, bull$hit jobs, hustle porn, fast money, personal vanity branding as identity, and endless self-mythologising about 'risk-taking' while externalising actual social costs onto everyone else.

Daniel Angus @antmandan.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
This is all part of a gross speculative culture built on rapid growth fantasies, attention farming, and the assumption that someone else will eventually buy the bag and cash you out for your 'work'. A sustainable business model is secondary to vibes, engagement metrics, and lifestyle signalling.

Daniel Angus @antmandan.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
There's a very specific late-capitalist archetype here: trust fund kids building personal brands around 'startup culture', hustle aesthetic, vapourware SaaS ideas, dropshipping, and performative antics aimed squarely at younger audiences who imagine themselves one lucky app away from escape velocity

The real story here should be why they didn't go harder? And why are we continuing to allow our natural resources to be plundered? And why are we cutting the NDIS rather than going after the billionaires? If the editorial is "won't someone think of my investment properties" then you deserve oblivion

The Australian mainstream media's apoplectic reaction to Labor's milquetoast tweaks to negative gearing and CGT is the only proof required about how detached the media class is from ordinary Australians. And they wonder why trust in the news industry is collapsing.

Is this not just normal social thinking? The idea that personal convenience might occasionally be weighed against collective cost for everyone else? As more people use alternatives to cars that things will get better for all? I ride past horrendous traffic everyday, honestly why do we do this?
050
Daniel Angus @antmandan.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
Often the bike, bus, ferry, or train is simply the best option anyway. But even when it isn't I really try to leave the car at home because every trip I take marginally worsens traffic, danger, noise, emissions, parking pressure and road demand for people who genuinely have no viable alternative.

And yes, I get the structural/cultural conditions here. The planning systems, the underinvestment, the decades of policy built around the private automobile. But I guess this is why it also appeals, every pedal stroke is a f&#$ you to the feckless political class that has contributed to this mess.

How many white collar jobs now consist almost entirely of moving information between screens, yet the people doing them still behave as though every daily activity requires a private SUV expedition, and somehow physically moving a human being 3km without a car is treated as an extreme sport.

I know it's coming from a positive place when someone says, shocked, "oh you rode a bicycle here?" but it just reveals how deep car brain runs in Australia. Yes, I travelled 4km, in fair weather, using one of the most common transport technologies in human history. I did not arrive by trebuchet.
