Very pleased to hear confirmation today that the Australian govt is standing by creators and not making changes to copyright. It’s time for big tech to accept the facts and come to the table. Our rights as creators must be respected in practice, as well as in principle. @asauthors.bsky.social

Quick reality check: there are less than 1.5 million under-16 teens (that is 13-15yos) in Australia. If Inman is right (and assuming most pre-teens didn't have accounts), they've had an average of three accounts blocked each. Doesn't pass the laugh test.

On hatred.
I hate all of this in almost every way a thing can be hated. I hate the factless waffle that surrounds Big AI’s every improbable goal. I hate how insipidly stupid, or just plain evil, those goals so often are, and the yawning chasm between them and any form of achievable reality. I hate that Big AI’s successes are inflated and its failures ignored — or are even categorised as hilarious mis-steps, like when AI chatbots tell people to eat poisonous mushrooms, put glue on pizza, or make air diffusers from chlorine gas.

I hate that Big AI consumes so much energy that every time you generate a six-fingered portrait of Anne Frank or a scene from the Vietnam war in the style of Studio Ghibli, you might as well just kill a polar bear with a crossbow. I hate that it can run roughshod over every copyright law and environmental protection on the planet in pursuit of the data it needs to continue failing, with no consequences save for the enrichment of the worst people on Earth, who have managed to make all of this magical bullshit seem sensible to an intellectual class comprised of people I wouldn’t trust to print an email.

(4/3 - I lied!). So what I think is most horrific about the Lib Gen / Meta thing is not only is it directly stealing intellectual property (IP rights you can bet your bottom dollar Meta would fight tooth and nail to protect if someone was stealing from them), it's directly hurting creative authors.

I've seen a few posts about 'what about libraries?!'. Well, libraries pay for the book (or the right to the ebook). And in Australia, if your book is in library you get what's called 'public lending rights'. Recognition your work is worth compensation, and people borrowing it aren't buying it.

This is so different to creative publishing. Creative authors are paid ~10% royalties (it differs with contracts and publishing format etc) and this is how they make their living. Many creative authors have to supplement by another job anyway, but royalties help. Lib Gen kills this. (2/3)

The Lib Gen / Meta thing - so, I do not care one iota if my academic articles are made free for others. Academic publishing pays nothing to authors. There's a really valid argument all academic work should be open access and a lot of great journals are headed that way. BUT - (1/3)

Completely delusional response from Universities Australia - if we needed confirmation they are simply grifters for the university corporate elite instead of the higher education sector as a whole, here it is. P.s join your union @nteunion.bsky.social www.smh.com.au/national/pro...
Universities Australia, a lobby group representing 39 of the country’s universities, said debate over vice-chancellor salaries was a distraction from the conversation about properly funding universities.

“Vice chancellors lead major organisations that underpin local economies, support thousands of jobs, educate thousands of students and generate private revenue streams which are reinvested in support of Australian employment, education and research,” its submission said.
