Saw the worst code of my career today. It was a JUnit test loading JARs directly from Gradle's build cache using hardcoded file paths to run the compiler on some random code in a feature. Horrifying. Yes it was flaky (and polluted other tests), and no it wasn't needed. Yes it was AI generated.

Another day, another GitHub outage. Of course, there's nothing in the UI to indicate this, you just have to sit there and try to do something 5 times before remembering to check the status page. You'd think they'd have some sort of banner they could show to save you the clicks 🫩

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I routinely see LLMs suggest 10x the amount of code needed to solve a problem. Something you could solve by changing a few existing lines of code is suddenly a whole new branch of logic with its own tree of classes and test cases.

it's my belief and anecdotal observation that roughly half of the code written on a daily basis is strictly unnecessary, when evaluated on whether it solves the problem at hand.

As tens of thousands across America protest the violence that ICE sows with impunity, federal agents shot and killed another person in Minneapolis today.

ICE terrorizes our cities. ICE puts us all in danger. Abolish ICE.

I never liked roast turkey until I convinced everyone to let me take over roasting duties and try butterflying the turkey last year. As it turns out, I just hate overcooked, under seasoned turkey and am now permanently in charge of roasting the family's turkeys.

Disappointed in Droidcon's decision to move the conference from NYC to Orlando. I attended every DCNYC event since I graduated in 2015 and cherish my memories of every one. Unlikely that I will be traveling to Florida anytime soon, so I guess it's the time to start attending London and Berlin confs.

fun thing I encountered at work this week – we discovered that LLM Agents decided to start setting environment variables that are only supposed to be set on CI on developer's machines, of course breaking the build for them :/

Android’s new security screening feature is bad and I fucking hate it. They wanted a mechanism for Google’s security team to block malicious developers. But the same mechanism can be used by the state to control what we can do with our devices.

had to dig out some old embedded programming concepts and Java concepts from my memory before it clicked. Kotlin compiler feels a lot more Java-y than Kotlin-y, but that makes sense given the JVM is (historically) Kotlin's primary build target, or maybe that's just the general shape of a compiler

rewriting a KSP as a Kotlin compiler plugin over the past week has really kicked my ass. I thought I had a good mental model of code generation, but it turns out that was just based around the nice abstractions of Java's annotation processing and KSP.

Very disappointed by this. It increases the barrier of entry to making apps, as it seems likely that it will require you to create some sort of developer account just to install an APK you develop.

one of the worst app UX that I run into regularly is the swipe-to-delete feature within the Google Authenticator app. it's way too easy to delete a code that could leave you locked out of your account. yes, there is a confirmation dialog, but it's presence just tells me they know it's a shitty UX.
