Anthropic banning “abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude in its new usage policies is proof to me that tech companies are going to moderate violence against AI before they ever moderate violence against women and minorities

For those that don't know programming or Java, this is like trying to answer a question on a math test by explaining how calculators are made.

Saw the worst code of my career today. It was a JUnit test loading JARs directly from Gradle's build cache using hardcoded file paths to run the compiler on some random code in a feature. Horrifying. Yes it was flaky (and polluted other tests), and no it wasn't needed. Yes it was AI generated.

It is particularly rich of him to worry that AI "could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems" when that is exactly what Claude Code is ALREADY doing to thousands of codebases across the world.

It's gross revisionism of him to claim that the models "were not capable of significant deception, manipulation, cheating" in 2023 when the earliest chatbot related suicides were reported THAT YEAR.

this weekly arms race of trying to stop some novel abuse of some hidden API or infrastructure before it takes the system down is getting kinda old.

anthony restaino @anthonycr.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
there's such high expectations placed on infrastructure to be able to withstand (and perform well under) what amounts to internal DDOS attacks. "I'll have my agent retry a job 20 times" has somehow become an accepted solution to a flaky test. Gradle builds barely held together before all this.

that makes sense. I did remember seeing the MLB scores pop up occasionally but I missed the others.

I don't see Bluesky doing that, or if they are it's hard to find the features, and it means that even those of us who use this platform daily will (temporarily) switch to a different one when there's a major ongoing event like the two you mentioned.

anthony restaino @anthonycr.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Maybe I'm misremembering, but I feel like Twitter would build features in anticipation of upcoming major events like the WC and NBA playoffs to track all ongoing games in its early-ish days and then would promote the features.

Another day, another GitHub outage. Of course, there's nothing in the UI to indicate this, you just have to sit there and try to do something 5 times before remembering to check the status page. You'd think they'd have some sort of banner they could show to save you the clicks 🫩

Yeah I've been met with similar shock when I told someone that I converted an XML based app to Compose without any AI assistance recently. I don't really have any advice on handling those situations, except just keep doing you.

yeah my OSS projects are 100% AI free, in part because I refuse to pay an LLM provider so that I can perform FREE labor on principle, in part because it keeps me sharp, and in part because I don't like the code they generate. I do use them at work though.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I routinely see LLMs suggest 10x the amount of code needed to solve a problem. Something you could solve by changing a few existing lines of code is suddenly a whole new branch of logic with its own tree of classes and test cases.

approaching code review with this assumption in mind allows you to hack away unnecessary abstractions and keep code more maintainable. always ask yourself, can I delete this code.

anthony restaino @anthonycr.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
it's my belief and anecdotal observation that roughly half of the code written on a daily basis is strictly unnecessary, when evaluated on whether it solves the problem at hand.

I can only assume, based on this trickery, that when they hand out a free 6 month subscription to Claude Max 20x to an OSS developer, that they are counting that as revenue.

because the devs aren't writing the code, they don't develop the muscle memory to catch mistakes that they ran into before. the end result is that you see the same mistakes being made by the same people every day, and no matter how many times you try to teach them to find themself, it doesn't stick.

anthony restaino @anthonycr.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
the larger problem that i see is that where i used to be able to address a skill gap through pair programming or sending someone an article to read, now i have no recourse to address. the LLMs are the ones making the mistakes, and the devs that lack the knowledge to catch them.

anthony restaino @anthonycr.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
have seen devs lacking basic knowledge all throughout my career. it's too soon to say whether the incidence has increased post LLMs. i will say that people that used to copy paste from stackoverflow, without attribution, are the same people vibe coding.

eliminating banks and private corporations from the act of riding the bus is 100% a socialist policy. every bus ride you take, you transact with a bank, a payment processor, and a private company that owns the card reader before that money reaches the government.

the mayor can't change the system, because he can't even access the tax revenue we produce without the NYS governor sending it our way. NYC mayorship has a long and complicated relationship with Albany. what he can and is doing is building broad support for socialist policy.

so do the job that we elected you to do, and shut down the government if they won't defund ICE. don't let us down like you did last time. don't let your legacy be one of cowardice, capitulation, and complicity with fascism.

you're not doing anything either. last I checked, the democrats let the government reopen without securing an extension on the healthcare subsidies, and allowing it to reopen didn't even save all the jobs. my own brother never got his job back after the furlough ended, because the budget was cut.
