Despite more than 1 in 4 MPs signing my motion against the Code, it is due to come into force without any debate or vote in Parliament. I have written to the Minister for Women and Equalities urging her to withdraw it now. 2/2

Keir Starmer is a bad person who used his power to make the United Kingdom a more unequal place and dismantle the possibility of opposing oppression and genocide, and to drive trans people from public life. If you think he is decent, I have news for you about your own moral judgement.

I think my reading is horrific domestic policy is often a Republican project that Democrats polarise against whereas here bullshit press conjured moral panics become the "common sense" amongst the main Westminster parties. Deffo not always true but I think there's something to it.

It was such an impressive first 6 months or so with Polanski but since like April things have stalled a bit I think. Decent locals tbf but not out of this world, and do make me worry about Greens electoral geography. Makerfield defensible, but yes worry it will extend well beyond that.

It is 2034. The UK General Election has just been won in a landslide by the Ban Everything Party. People dance in the streets, weeping with joy at the news that the country will be put to rights at last. Mass arrests follow, as dancing in the street is one of the first 157 things banned...

Terrible news: the Court of Appeal has just ruled that the Government’s ban on Palestine Action is lawful. PA is now likely to lodge an appeal before the Supreme Court. So the mass arrests of peaceful people sitting with cardboard signs will continue. Because that is what terrorism looks like ...

Phone ban, social media ban & curfew, trans bathroom ban, trans youth healthcare ban, repeated protest ban, arrests of peaceful protestors for Palestine. All this government seems able to do is ban, ban, ban. No positive vision of the future, just kneejerk authoritarian crackdowns.

Quite a few GCs trot out "it's not really about toilets..." but I don't think I've seen them follow up with something like, "and thus we should just allow trans people to use the toilet that aligns with their gender", which is suggestive of how entrenched they are.

I am loathe to give credit to David Cameron, but it is also wild that in 2016, Cameron's response to the UK falling to third in the ILGA rankings behind Malta was “I want this top spot back again.” Now we slip to 22nd and the government don't even mention it...
Last year, I’d have been able to say how proud I was to be Prime Minister of what was officially the best country in Europe to be gay, bisexual or transgender – but that’s no longer the case.

Malta has overtaken us! I don’t know quite what happened – I’ve got to get out to Malta and find out because I want this top spot back again.

Optimistically, I think they might be boiling themselves with this if they are trying to make a controversy of a clip of Andy Burnham saying he is proud to be British. I thought he articulated himself well and I can't imagine how far down a rabbit hole one must go to feel outraged by it.

It feels like a progressive government would need to examine the role of the UKSC, there seems to be a pattern of it engaging in significant overreach in terms of curtailing people's rights, in a way in which politicians can just duck responsibility for it.

Motion to reject the EHRC's
Code of Practice
Alongside colleagues, I have tabled a motion to disapprove the Equality Act 2010: Draft Code of Practice for services, public functions and associations. We cannot support it, and we have a responsibility to our trans constituents to resist it.
This motion is currently the only available mechanism through which Parliament can reject the EHRC's Code of Practice; if it is debated and passed within the 40-day scrutiny window, it would prevent the Code from being issued by the EHRC and coming into force.
Please email your MP asking them to sign
EDM 240.The Code will exclude trans people from services and facilities that they have long used without issue, putting them at increased risk of harassment and violence, and effectively pushing them out of public life.
It ushers in an era of enforced segregation for trans people, the policing of which will be outsourced to service providers, including businesses, charities and public bodies. In the statement to the House of Commons yesterday, the Minister even suggested that where members of the public are unsure of someone's gender within a single-sex facility,
"most people will have the common sense to step in where necessary or, if they are concerned, to alert a member of staff."
Meanwhile, this guidance does not give clarity and confidence to organisations that want to be trans-inclusive. Its impact also extends beyond the rights of trans people.
The government's own Equality Impact Assessment warns that "women who are considered masculine may face greater scrutiny" and that disabled people could face adverse impacts. The Code represents a profound rollback of rights, which will affect trans people directly and erode the principles of inclusion, dignity and equality upon which all our rights depend.
This guidance must not become statutory; the government should withdraw it and instead legislate to clarify and protect trans people's rights, privacy and inclusion.

Genuinely feel more positively about the Lib Dems after this than I ever have tbh. Disappointed that no Green MPs turned up - I know they have far fewer (and frankly wouldn't want Ramsay to attend...) but it would have been reassuring to see at least one stand up for trans rights in this debate.

The new EHRC Code of Practice is not fit for purpose. It does not provide clear guidance or do enough to protect everyone from discrimination, and it is not compatible with longstanding British values. @EdDavey.LibDems.org.uk and @MarieCGoldman.bsky.social have written to Bridget Phillipson. ⬇️

He does compare favourably to Starmer who let a wrong interpretation of the SC ruling just overwrite his opinions (his answer "I think the SC has answered that" to whether trans women are women...) But restoring trans rights requires a political fight and I'm dubious whether Burnham will pick it.

I do think it was a bit odd for them to choose Father Ted instead. Linehan is a known all-out reactionary bore who was likely to have this kind of response, and by choosing one of his shows it kind of amplifies his message.

There's been polling on this and around half the country think Reform is a racist party! And 43% explicitly include their voters in that. So it's far from just "woke academics" who can see the obvious. yougov.com/en-gb/articl...
