Life updates: not much. Returned to FFXIV to actually finish the story this time, did my first savage tier, and got a shiny orange number on a boss 🥳. Met interesting folks and made some friends. Now planning trip to NYC for Labor Day. Still unsure what to do besides food. Too many options 😂

New iOS update made iphones buttons contrast better and I could turn off increased contrast and now actually see things! The contrast mode buttons unfortunately look awful now but at least they're visible, but I feel there definitely could have been more effort into them being nicer to look at.

Went to an IBMs internal presentation day by our design system team and it was super interesting! A lot of new components, but most impressively they discussed (and most importantly defined!) how they're making the system AI ready. The engineering perspective was especially cool

Making friends last year with an airport ops person has paid dividends in knowledge about what's normal vs irregular at airports, especially with increasing news coverage of crashes. Airports are wildly complex ecosystems. I highly recommend finding an expert you trust vs lay people for info.

Unrelated to my last posts: having lived in Bay Area for 2 1/2 years, I’ve met so many doomer mindsets, especially from locals (obviously not all). I’m not a fan of toxic positivity (things won’t magically be “ok”), but saying everything sucks and doing nothing to fix it is absolutely wild to me.

One talking point I see a lot lately is “we’re no longer shipping features, we’re shipping outcomes.” Usually this is attributed to AI (which makes zero sense). It’s incredibly short sighted and shows people haven’t gone far enough into the “why” of what they’re launching.

How did you figure out what you wanted to do with/from life? I’ve been trying to help a friend who’s got good things going on job wise but they have no greater purpose beyond it & hobbies. So far I’ve asked them what gives them energy and what they would want people to say about them after death.

PAX was fun. Third year enforcing (working the show). If you came up to cozy gaming in the AM you saw me! Shitposts aside about GPT-5, the problem with it counting letters incorrectly is a tokenization problem, and likely can’t be fixed cost effectively. WHAT CAN be fixed and is the issue is the models suck at metacognition, task comprehension, and analysis of how to approach the problem. AI dumb still😡

I made sweeping cuts to my presentation yesterday from 48 slides a project down to 30 a project (~avg 20 seconds per slide). It’s definitely a tighter story with much more details about how I made decisions based on research. Could still be a bit shorter. Will post it online for feedback soon :)
