SCOTUS sometime in the near future: “Having editorial standards that include being truthful and not using slurs is an infringement on First Amendment rights…” I wish this was a joke.

Anyone need a genuinely *nice* story for this Wednesday? "Takahashi thought the lost barrel might be adrift somewhere on the Bering Sea by now. Or, he imagined an 'Alaskan bear wearing my down jacket or like, playing my flute...'"

B.C. man reunited with beloved flute, 5 years after it floated away down a Yukon river | CBC News
Jun Takahashi was stunned when he saw the online post: someone in the Yukon bush had found a canoe barrel full of his mildew-y camping gear, and his long-lost flute.

This whole thread, but especially the last sentence here. The Democrats are having the most bass ackward response to the surging popularity of the DSA by blaming voters for liking DSA candidates. The fact that LISTENING to voters doesn’t occur to them does NOT inspire confidence!

When I voted for Joe Biden in 2020 I told everyone who would listen that the Democrats had failed to make the primary about finding someone who could beat back the growing fascist threat. I said that while I was willing to vote to kick the can down the road a few years, that was all we were doing.

Cops lie. Cops commit crimes. Cops are abusers. The structure, culture, and system of policing allows cops to get away with these acts. We need to confront it. It’s not going away.

The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Color-blind meritocracy was, for many years, a successful rhetorical strategy for undermining antidiscrimination law and excluding Black people from selective schools and prominent positions. That’s why so many former segregationists seemed to suddenly embrace the concept in the 1970s. For them, resegregation—not color-blindness—was always the goal. As long as the success of some immigrants could be used to paint Black students as undeserving, color-blind meritocracy was good. But now many on the right see a new problem: too many Asian Americans in elite spaces. Their success, therefore, must be portrayed as a sinister theft of real (white) Americans’ birthright.

The declining “social trust” that the administration warned against is, of course, not the fault of these students. The problem is bigots like Bo French who cannot accept into their community people who do not share their race and religion, and those who monetize or otherwise profit from that bigotry by spreading it through social media. Like the proverbial child who kills their parents and asks for mercy as an orphan, they are responsible for the problem they are decrying.

This is why our Rapid Response protects our library and our librarians from our local Mom for Liberty. Marginalized kids have always found libraries to be safe spaces, places of refuge against bullying. It’s why bigots target them.

I think this identifies a struggle I have being a “leader” who is multiply marginalized in a community where white residents dominate. The gap in how we feel the stakes is nearly impossible to overcome. I am acutely aware of my “less than human” status. It’s an intolerable daily existence.

Imani is making a vital point: People in positions of privilege often need a “hope” narrative to take action. Why, the reasoning goes, put effort into trying to make change if you can’t make change? But Black folks exemplify a different approach: fight because your humanity demands it.
