My spouse created a meditation space outside with a wooden bench, a statue and a small cascading stone fountain in the time since I left for work this morning, and it’s amazing. I feel my heart rate slow and my shoulders unclench just looking at it. It’s so nice. What a beautiful thing to do.

I acknowledge that I live and practice on the ancestral homeland of the Cherokee people, who were forcibly removed from this land. I offer gratitude and respect to those who lived here before me, to their descendants, and to the living Cherokee nations today. #indigenous #Cherokee #Ellijay

The problem with working at a 24hr center is that sometimes I get pulled to work a late shift, and then it takes me hours to actually chill out enough to go to sleep after. So tired, yet also wired. It’s ok, brain. You can stop now. (I drew this animation a while back.)

I think the art/craft I’m proudest of in my whole life was this anthology I printed and hand-bound for my niece. I even sewed in real headbands to finish it (if you know bookbinding, you get why that’s cool). I’m very much a diy amateur, but I was really happy with this one.

The coolest thing about learning about mushrooms is that I’m noticing them everywhere. I saw these while walking around today.
Bright red round mushrooms with white bulbs, on the ground among dead leaves and green grass.

I went mushroom foraging yesterday, with a professional guide. We didn’t find all that many edible mushrooms, but it was really fun to learn about a few and explore the temperate rainforest.
Maritime forest with tall trees creating a cainomy and many fallen trees on beds of green moss. A figure with a long beard wearing layers and a raincoat speaks to a group whose heats are just visible. A hand with grey fingernails holds a large yellow/orange chanterelle mushroom. Tall red-toned straight tree trunks with bright green leaves and needles at the time. Bright green moss on the ground.Large mushrooms growing on a fallen log on a bed of green ferns.

I don’t post a lot of food pcs, but this French toast I had this morning from a restaurant called Palate in Downtown Vancouver was the most amazing I’ve ever had. I’m ruined for all others forever.

Also, they may be common in Canada, but this is the first time I’ve seen a physalis (gooseberry) outside of Germany, which is funny since I believe they are endemic to South America.

So, I’m walking around Western Vancouver and this older guy with a long white beard takes one look at the comically large pack on my back and smiles and says “Enjoying the journey, eh?” I laughed and said I was, to which he replied “stay hydrated!”Sometimes people are great.

It was definitely a dive, but once you showed up for a third time or so, you were counted as a regular. Spouse doesn’t drink at all anymore and I do only rarely, but that place, for that time was special. A good bar can do that.

Saw some repost-bait about the first bar you drank at after turning legal age and it got me thinking about The Northside Tavern in Atlanta and what a community that place later became for spouse and me both. Here’s Cory blowing fire on a slow evening before the crowds got there, circa 2010.

Now I’m feeling all nostalgic for that smoky, sticky, dark dive. Here’s a video I made in 2012 of local blues legend and good friend, Lola Gulley starting off her set. She tended bar on Thursday afternoons and did all the music for our wedding. She passed in 2022. Her memory is indeed a blessing.

I’ve shared versions of my weekly log/journal before, but I like my current iteration. Especially when I’m feeling overwhelmed, setting this up every week makes me feel like I’m still tethered to some solid reality.
An open dot journal with hand drawn boxes for each day of the week.wothin ea h days box are several smaller empty boxes.

In the upper left is this week’s dates (September 13-19 2026), then spaces for “try this”, “intention” and “remember”.

On the bottom right is a grid for the seven days of the week and of things that’s are blurred out. Not blurred out are “meditate” “exercise” and “stretch”. Around the grid are spaces for “Overall Mood”
“Total Exercise Minutes”
“Average Sleep Per Night:”

I woke up feeling overwhelmed and with a headache, so I sat out on the porch in the dark and quiet and watched it slowly get light behind the dense fog. Crows, chickadees, woodpeckers, tree frogs are making a great racket now. It’s wonderful.
A photo take from inside a dark screen porch of a deck with trees and fog behind it. Some colorful small flags hang across the deck in the left hand upper corner. It all looks kind of wet.
