Swells partly generated by Rachel will continue to build along the coast of Southern California and northern Baja CA. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions, as well as moderate to isolated major coastal flooding, through early next week. hurricanes.gov

A glowing stellar nursery 👶⭐ Webb’s infrared sensitivity has revealed the protostars & stars of NGC 7129, a stellar nursery that lies 3,300 light-years from Earth. In the centre, lies the massive star LkH(alpha) 234, which has carved into its cloudy surroundings 👉 www.esa.int/ESA_Multimed... 🔭 🧪
A young star cluster filled with many stars that display Webb’s unique eight-pronged diffraction pattern. At its center is a yellow star which sports the largest diffraction pattern. To the left of the star, there is a region filled with yellow dust and gas that extends from the star to the left border of the image. This yellow region extends from the bottom, covering about two-thirds of the image. The yellow region has several blue stars of different sizes embedded within. The top third, which lies outside of the yellow region, holds a few bright protostars, within dense gray gas. Those stars illuminate the gas, making it appear blue. A few red outflows from other protostars are visible above this grayish-blue region. To the right of the central star, there is a clumpy, flame-like plume of red dust and gas with protostars that emit a soft white light within. The plume is surrounded by more dense gray gas and dust. There are several background galaxies strewn throughout the image. Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI; Image Processing: A. Pagan (STScI)

NOIRLab image of the week Rubin and the Seven Sisters Credit: NSF-DOE Rubin Observatory/NOIRLab/SLAC/AURA/H. Stockebrand noirlab.edu/public/image... 🔭🧪
The Pleiades glow in the southern sky above NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory from a viewpoint on Cerro Pachón in Chile. Rubin Observatory is jointly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. Its 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) began earlier this year on 29 June 2026.

This NOIRLab Image of the Week captures the seven bright stars of the sisterly asterism. The Pleiades are part of an open star cluster of more than 1000 confirmed members, known as Messier 45. This cluster is dominated by hot, blue luminous stars, of which up to seven can be seen with the naked eye under normal dark skies. There are reports of 11 members seen in the darkest skies with perfect naked-eye vision.

The Milky Way contains thousands of star clusters like the Pleiades, and Rubin Observatory will precisely measure them across six spectral bands. With unprecedented depth and homogeneous sky coverage, Rubin will make some of the first detailed observations of many star clusters in the southern hemisphere. Its observations will also uncover new star clusters and inform our understanding of the evolution of star clusters and of stars generally. During LSST, Rubin will measure approximately 17 billion stars.

A one-sided spiral 🌀 NGC 4654 is a spiral galaxy struggling against titanic forces.  As the galaxy moves through space it rams through the intracluster medium, which gives the galaxy an overall asymmetric look  👉 esahubble.org/images/potm2607a 🔭
A spiral galaxy. It has a prominent spiral arm on one side (lower left) and a wide, glowing core. Dark brown filaments of dust swirl through its disc, while blue clusters of stars are found mostly going out to its arm. On the opposite side to the arm (upper right), gas trails off from the disc, out of the view in this image. A matching spiral arm is not visible on this side. The galaxy lies on a dark background. Planetary nebula NGC 2392, nicknamed the Lion Nebula, against the black background of space. The nebula is circular in shape, and looks like a male lion’s head. In the very centre is a small, pinkish-white circle with eight-point diffraction spikes, a white dwarf star. Surrounding the star are light purple-pink bubbles and shells. They form an oval with two arcs near the top, reminiscent of a lion’s face and its ears.

Curiosity Postcard Celebrates Rover’s 5,000th Day on Mars science.nasa.gov/photojournal... #Mars 🔭🧪
While parked at a sand ridge nicknamed “Chocolatal,” NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover used its black-and-white navigation cameras to capture panoramas at two times of day. The first was taken on Aug. 30, 2026, at 9:56 a.m. local Mars time; the second was taken on Sep. 2, 2026, at 5:39 p.m. local Mars time. Those dates correspond to the 5,000th and 5,003rd Martian days, or sols, of the mission.
After being sent back to Earth, the two images were merged together. Color was added for an artistic interpretation of the scene, with blue representing the morning panorama and yellow representing the afternoon one. The resulting “postcard” is similar to past examples created with rover images, such as one taken in November 2021.
The rover’s deck can be seen in the foreground, including its can-shaped UHF antenna, used for sending data to orbiting spacecraft, and its finned Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG), a nuclear power source, at its rear. The rover’s tracks can be seen trailing off in the distance.
Curiosity is in the lower foothills of Mount Sharp, a 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer-tall) mountain that sits within Gale Crater. This image looks down toward the crater floor, with the crater rim barely perceptible on the horizon.
Curiosity was built by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managed by Caltech in Pasadena, California. JPL leads the mission on behalf of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington as part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program portfolio.

Webb reveals one of its largest images to date! 😲 This starry view shows the nearby star-forming region IC 348. Here, astronomers searched for brown dwarfs, objects which are less massive than the smallest stars. Read more 👉 www.esa.int/Science_Expl... 🔭🧪
A star-forming region. It is blanketed in thick clouds of gas and dust, millions of kilometres across, that form swirling patterns. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the centre of the scene. Each is crowned with six long points created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors. In the upper right, a couple of hidden stars blast out long, glowing jets of material. Credit: ESA/Webb, NASA, CSA, K. Luhman, C. Alves De Oliveira, M. Zamani (ESA/Webb)

A beautiful day (in the north west) 🌱 #BlueSkyArtShow #Bloomscrolling #EastCoastKin #UKGardening #StunDay #SundayYellow
It was indeed a beautiful day in the North West of England, warm and sunny except for about an hour around lunchtime when some big old dark and dirty raincoats rolled in and it looked like it might start chucking it down really hard. But it didn't. This picture of yellow sunflowers was taken during that hour mixing bright sunshine with tempestuous skies.
