Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 10hI have been following your Hobb journey and it reeeeallly makes me want to dive in ... but as someone who did the orig Assassin trilogy maybe 15 years ago and then stopped (and subsequently forgot most of it) I am kinda daunted. (Possibly terrified.) 120

Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Ohh, nice find! Yeah, I would love to find these in French translation and see if the exact register contours carry over across translations in the Romance languages. 010
Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 08/10/2026YES! It is the most emotionally charged scene in the book, I think, and that slide into intimacy was just perfect. The audiobooks are not all released in Spanish, but Komarr and ACC are next up. I am really looking forward to seeing how the translator handles Miles and Ekaterin's pronoun use. 010
Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 08/10/2026What I love is that just a few lines before, the "I can love you, grieve with you, but not judge you" is STILL formal. It's her "I love you" while refusing the proposal that does it. And thereafter they are both in informal. 110
Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 08/10/2026It does not happen until after the war, during the second proposal (after they have come clean about the real reason for the invasion). His proposal is still in the formal, and C is the one to switch with "Te quiero." 110
Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 08/10/2026So, there is the "Dear C-Captain" during his initial proposal (before Stuben's arrival to rescue her). A is still calling C by usted. And later, when A arrives just after the Vorrutyer scene, he mouths her name. Still using usted. 220
Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 08/10/2026That would make sense but it is soooo much later. That confessional is all still in the formal register. When I tell you I was in agony waiting for it! (I will share in a sec, but want to guess who made the switch first?) 120
Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Want to guess where it happens? I think the translator absolutely nailed it. 120
Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I am currently listening to the audiobooks in Spanish. Listening to SoH was like getting to read it for the first time, nearly 30 years later. And what I was waiting for, the biggest source of tension, was when C and A would switch over from usted to tú. It was just sublime. 280

Annie @annebornschein.bsky.social · 31/07/2026I don't think anyone should claim 100% confidence. But ... I really think you would be surprised just how messy keyboard composition is, even for professional writers, when it isn't transcription by a trained typist. And in creative writing there are also pauses to compose that are visible. 100
