Libraries are the last proof that the richest things in life are free.
Photo by Talha Resitoglu. A library reading room seen from the rear. A barrel-vaulted ceiling opens to a long skylight of pale glass. Tiered wooden shelves hold books along two galleries, with a stained glass window, a round clock, and carved lions on marble at the right. Below, people read and work at long tables, laptops and bottles beside them. A white-haired man in a pale shirt sits nearest, turned away. Red and cream patterned carpet covers the floor.

The final entry in Wendy Cope's Collected Poems (2025)
The End

Not yet sans everything.
Thanks to my glasses, hearing aids, dental implant,
walking stick, inhalers, statins,
and carefully rationed painkillers,
I am glad to be alive
as I walk the last mile or two
through the valley of the shadow.

Caught off guard by the stillness at the heart of this Ray Carver poem
The Window

A storm blew in last night and knocked out
the electricity. When I looked
through the window, the trees were translucent.
Bent and covered with rime. A vast calm
lay over the countryside.
I knew better. But at that moment
I felt I'd never in my life made any
false promises, nor committed
so much as one indecent act. My thoughts
were virtuous. Later on that morning,
of course, electricity was restored.
The sun moved from behind the clouds,
melting the hoarfrost.
And things stood as they had before.

TO WHITE NOISE

You are the sound silence
makes in its sleep, air made

visible by smoke, deepest
breath with no breathing,

O my personal ocean, O un-
broken shush of mortality,

O my digital sister, thank
you, thank you for keeping

the children from climbing
over the fence of sleep.

Billy Collins, born on this day in 1941
Petunias

According to the wisdom brewing at the seminar table,
a poem that begins with petunias
should find a way to get away from petunias.

It should deviate from its path,
break the flower-chain of content
transcending botanical considerations altogether.

But sometimes a poem shows
no interest in executing a sudden turn,
swerving off in some unexpected direction

much to the reader's surprise and delight.
Instead, the poem continues happily on its way,
plowing straight down the page

and ends up ending with nothing but petunias,
a row of them along a brick path,
a trowel dropped in the dark soil,

or a vase of them by a window,
the stems bent in the glassy water, why not
a poem with petunias growing from its mouth and ears.

March / ripped out of February, a raw thing. Marianne Boruch
CAR COVERED WITH SNOW

Before I clear the windows, I sometimes sit inside. And the stillness is such that I lose how the day works.
It soaks up
all the steely details: March
ripped out of February, a raw thing. Sometimes my son has patience. And we sit a few minutes like this in the weird half-light. He says: we're in a closed fist, Mama.
Or, it's like the car's eye is closed. We're deep in the brain then, seeing as the blind see, all listening. Outside, the cardinal tinks tinks his alarm call,
his scared call. I hear it: the snow so terribly white.
And he is brilliant,
conspicuous.

What, you may ask, does a forgotten poem by a foreign-born Hollywood extra have to tell us now? All I can say is that Alexander Voloshin’s SIDETRACKED has been a source of comfort for me over the past few years—a sympathetic voice reaching across decades. “Been there,” he nods…

Instructions on Not Giving Up
Ada Limón
1976 –
More than the fuchsia funnels breaking out
of the crabapple tree, more than the neighbor’s
almost obscene display of cherry limbs shoving
their cotton candy-colored blossoms to the slate
sky of Spring rains, it’s the greening of the trees
that really gets to me. When all the shock of white
and taffy, the world’s baubles and trinkets, leave
the pavement strewn with the confetti of aftermath,
the leaves come. Patient, plodding, a green skin
growing over whatever winter did to us, a return
to the strange idea of continuous living despite
the mess of us, the hurt, the empty. Fine then,
I’ll take it, the tree seems to say, a new slick leaf
unfurling like a fist to an open palm, I’ll take it all.
