Such an interesting piece. But surely it’s no different to prose - it’s very rare to be ‘literary’ and win popular acclaim/sell truckloads. ‘All poets really are “performance poets” because even the most “literary” poets must read and opine in public…’. So true, & a problem for prose authors too.

To this day I have no idea why Natural Causes took off as a self-pubbed eBook the way it did, but that's what kick-started my writing career. I'd been writing for twenty-five years before that, of course, and haven't stopped since. That's all an author can do: keep writing.

Yes, that’s what I find so sad - that we haven’t taught the next generation to take flight! As she says, that’s the hardest part of parenting: reassuring them ‘you’ll be fine’ when inside you’re sweating yourself. Trust is the biggest, hardest gift.
