Most, probably, of our decisions to do something positive, the full consequences of which will be drawn out over many days to come, can only be taken as a result of animal spirits ... -Keynes

Ukraine blows up Russian data centres and immediately and mysteriously online talk about Germany’s Far Right AfD virtually disappears. Stop Putin you stop the Far Right.

One way you can tell someone is part of the establishment is they believe being called a Nazi is worse than acting like one.

A lot of things went downhill once we made "business" a profession instead of actually producing things.

I've found that people in service jobs generally hate customers proportionally to how well the business is run. A well-run and sustainable business is much more pleasant for everyone to interact with so the vibes are much better.

American small business owners largely see themselves as lower-level rentiers in a quasi-feudal economy as opposed to service providers in a competitive market economy, and part of that means not having to actually be competent at providing services

Yep. Becoming an intelligent and moral person is hard (and sometimes unpleasant) work so most people are only as smart and moral as they need to (or are trained to) be. When wealth and power isolates people from any consequences for their actions they end up stupid, careless, and cruel.

I think we've all learned in the last few years that putting congress in charge of policing, the president destroys the rule of law in favor of rule of the mob

Really makes you question the wisdom of having the DOJ report to the president. I'm starting to think all federal law enforcement should be part of the federal court system

It's not mission creep. The whole point of having a country is protecting its citizens and helping them live good lives. And if the private sector is too greedy to do it then the government has to.

Ossoff is one of the very few people adequately channeling Evelyn Normielib these days the base doesn't want to hear entreaties to our better natures, they don't want to go high while the other side goes low, they want someone to come on the TV and go "these people are garbage" he's good at it

I've spent a lot of time debunking claims that way overstate the migration impacts of wealth taxes. But fear not - if we put our minds to it, I do believe we can design a wealth tax high enough to get Elon to flee the country

republicans wrote us off long ago. you dont see republicans trying to win over clinton/obama/biden/kerry voters. and its more of an uphill climb for them. if dems spent 1/3 as much time cultivating their base as they do kissing the feet of republicans hoping theyll change, the party wouldnt lose

a big reason that conservatives like trump is he doesnt shy away from naming hrc, obama, biden etc as his adversaries. he says their names with his full chest and then does his dopey nicknames. that tells his supporters "this guy aint afraid and he thinks theyre pieces of shit too"

It kind of makes sense when running against a strong opponent without a lot of baggage. Running against someone like Collins, where "hosts racist podcasts from his house" is a valid statement, you probably want to call as much attention to their name as possible.

The entire Republican Party and broader conservative movement need to be smashed to bits. Donor networks gotta be exposed and disrupted. All the outside machinery needs to be dismantled. And electorally it must lose over and over and over and over. We need a truth and reconciliation commission.

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.

Black text on white background
"This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.

The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes.

Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.

To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity."

This whole thread is a great example of why I hate generic labels like "fascist" in political rhetoric. Seems much more effective to say, "this thing they want is bad because X" than "they are fascists" because then you invite your opponents to argue over the label rather than defend themselves
