“Brain Eating Amoeba” #devilsburger Philou has a panic after his little trip to the ER (Latin class is boring, but Biology is fun! Not sure he’s passing that class either though the way things are going..) (decided to make a lil comic out of my old doodle page)
Philou: this class is so boring!

He starts dozing off and imagining Rich doing romantic CPR on him after the post drowning experience but catches himself in weird shock.

Philou: THE AMOEBA IS EATING MY BRAINPhilou takes out his phone and hides it under his desk between his legs. “Maybe the doctors missed someghing.” Starts googling: MOST DANGEROUS AMOEBA USA. AMOEBA BRAIN DAMAGE. MENTAL CHANGE PERMANENT. BRAIN DAMAGE DOES IT MAKE YOU GAY.

it is very cool (read: very not cool) that "What if the entire regional economy immediately exploded?" is a ballot measure in the bay area because we are in the 'touching the hot stove' era of american history. if you live in the bay area you should vote for the regional transit measure.
The ballot initiative would raise the sales tax rate by 0.5 percentage points in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Contra Costa and Alameda counties and by 1 percentage point in San Francisco, and is expected to generate roughly $980 million annually for the next 14 years to sustain bus, train, metro and ferry lines.

Many of the region’s transit agencies have already proposed contingency plans if the measure fails. BART said it would likely have to end service at 9 p.m. instead of at midnight, reduce train frequencies to 30 minutes and move from five-line to three-line service outside of peak commute hours. Caltrain has proposed eliminating weekend services, closing more than a third of stations and ending operations around 9 p.m. instead of 1 a.m. AC Transit is looking at reducing service by 16%, while Muni said it could eliminate up to 20 routes, cut service by at least 30% and end regular evening service.

The fiscal cliff facing transit agencies was triggered by the decline in ridership due to the pandemic and hit agencies heavily dependent on fare revenues, like BART, the hardest.SPUR, a nonprofit policy think tank sponsoring the measure, released a report last month that found that if the measure and San Francisco’s Proposition H fail, traffic delays on the Bay Bridge could increase by 33 minutes heading west in the morning and 43 minutes heading east in the evening. Caldecott Tunnel traffic could see delays of an additional 20 minutes in the morning and 27 minutes during the evening commute. Congestion could also worsen along Interstate 580, Interstate 680 and U.S. 101, the report found.

Nilah doing the Lord's work here, but ESPECIALLY with this section. I had no idea this was allowed and it makes total sense! (Although it's fun to go back and look at the estimated release date on our original PW announcement and have a little lolsob from time to time.)
Don’t Announce the Deal Until Art is (Near) Complete
Announcing a book deal in Publishers Marketplace or Publishers Weekly is an exciting, momentous occasion. However, it doesn’t need to happen as soon as the deal is agreed upon. Publishers can wait to make the announcement. Much like I discussed with release schedules, announcing the release date too soon puts pressure on the graphic novel team. It’s a better move to hold the release date until the book is complete or nearing completion. The book is announced closer to the release date and readers have less time to wait, so they will not forget about the book between the announcement and release.

I'll be dropping in as guest lecturer for the @universityoflou.bsky.social 's Black Death class on Thursday. This was arranged weeks ago, but I'll be obligated now to include the Russian plague story. I've asked the students in advance to learn the term "ascertainment bias." Lots of aDNA + History!
The title slide for a presentation schedule for the Black Death class at the University of Louisville, entitled "What's New in Black Death History?" On the right side is a schematic phylogenetic tree, showing the late medieval proliferation of Yersinia pestis, leading up to modern strains. On the right is an image from a 14th-century manuscript, showing the medical faculty of the University of Paris presenting their treatise on plague to the French king.
