But we all know that Ricardo Reis is really a figment of the imagination of Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa: used to be a monarchist poet in exile, is now an economics professor writing odes about economic growth at the LSE. #RicardoReis #FernandoPessoa

In one of Brazil’s most beautiful towns, one of the world’s most extraordinary literary events is happening this week. In 2004, when #FLIP was in its 2nd yr, I wrote about it for @ftweekend.com. I was invited back to chair events in later editions. Truly my happy place… authory.com/AngelGurriaQ...

Brazil’s rich literary tradition (or Flipping in Parati)
For five days in July, the Brazilian seaside town of Parati hosted some of the world’s most celebrated authors. Where else might one spot Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt tripping over colossal cobbles w...

It’s here! My #summer list of #fiction in #translation in this weekend’s @ftweekend.com. A bit shorter than usual, so much harder to choose between so many excellent books. #Mexico #Ukraine #Brazil #Morocco #France #Taiwan

By Álvaro Enrigue
Transl. Natasha Wimmer
In a novel that roams fearlessly across styles, eras, and countries, one of Mexico’s outstanding storytellers layers an account of a family road trip across the American Southwest onto a retelling of the defeat of legendary Apache warrior Geronimo, in the late 19th century, after years of pursuit by the American and Mexican armies.

My Women
By Yuliia Iliukha
Transl. Hanna Leliv
In this delicate collection of short stories, the devastation of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is told through the voices of women – the mothers, wives, widows, daughters, survivors, fighters, evacuees, the ones who left, the ones who stayed behind. A tender and heartbreaking reminder of the human price of war.

Exemplary Humans
By Juliana Leite
Transl. Zoë Perry
Locked in her Rio de Janeiro apartment while an unnamed epidemic rages outside, near-centenarian Natalia pursues small pleasures, remembers a life filled with purpose, and puzzles at the void left by people and things she loved and lost. Memories of Brazil’s dictatorship swirl uneasily in the background as Natalia ponders the only meaningful question: “How to live?”

I'll Take the Fire
By Leïla Slimani
Transl. Sam Taylor
In the final instalment of her semi-autobiographical trilogy, the French-Moroccan author follows sisters Mia and Inès, who leave their native Morocco to study in Paris. Echoing real family stories, including the wrongful imprisonment of Slimani’s father, the novel explores issues of immigration, identity and belonging as the sisters strive to find their foothold.

Taiwan Travelogue
By Yáng Shuāng-zǐ
Transl. Lin King
Presented in the guise of a Japanese writer’s account of her travels across Japanese-occupied Taiwan in the 1930’s, and told through the prism of an increasingly complex relationship with her local interpreter, this year’s winner of the International Booker Prize is a richly multi-layered meditation on language and longing.

“I enjoy sitting at my desk like a child playing with his toys. It’s work, essentially, but it’s fun and games also.” Can’t believe it’s been over 20 yrs since my @parisreview.bsky.social interview with Pamuk was published. He got the @nobelprize.org the following year. Still a highlight for me.

“Literature is pleasure and knowledge, like sex.” This excellent @parisreview.bsky.social interview by Andrés Barba reminded me of the time I interviewed Cercas at the Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty (FLIP). That’s me in the photo (R) with Cercas (L) & Colombia’s Juan Gabriel Vásquez.

Dorothy Tse’s CITY LIKE WATER, beautifully translated by Natascha Bruce, shows how easily the language of dreams can become the language of nightmares. My review in today’s @ftweekend.com @fitzcarraldoeds.bsky.social #HongKong www.ft.com/content/49cd...

"...a nation that has long been considered Latin America’s cinema laggard"? @economist.com is a fine publication, but sometimes, out of ignorance or laziness or both, it spews absolute nonsense. #Brazil #Brasil #CinemaBrasileiro

A masterclass in the art of #translation. In 2013 I joined MJC on the jury of the Harvill Secker Young Translator's Award. Later that year we went toe-to-toe in a Translation Duel at Cheltenham Lit Fest, chaired by Danny Hahn. Heady & humbling times, learning from the best. @parisreview.bsky.social

Two huge losses to the world of letters: Kenya's Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o passed away on 28 May. American novelist & memoirist Edmund White died on 3 June. I met and interviewed them both at the Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty, in Brazil. Ed was also a generous mentor and teacher.
Ángel sits on stage chairing a conversation with Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o and Richard Flanagan at a Brazilian literary festival.Edmund White on stage at a Brazilian literary festival reading from his memoir, My Lives.
