COMMENTARY: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has spent years eroding democracy. Now, it looks as though he’s chosen this geopolitical moment to bury the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the secular founder of the Republic of Turkey.

"All this is probably beyond the worst-case scenario the planners at the presidential palace gamed out. There’s no obvious way out for them". Good point by @selimkoru.bsky.social. I would love to share the same optimism about the protest's impact, but it's hard to see.

The title was not my choice but here is my latest for Foreign Affairs on Imamoglu's arrest, arguing that in this brazen act of political suppression, the Turkish government has taken a momentous step toward full-fledged autocracy. www.foreignaffairs.com/turkey/turke...

What's happening in Turkey is a very dark turn in the country's authoritarian trajectory--but it's minor news next to yet another US-sanctioned Israeli massacre of hundreds of Gazans; and autocrats like Erdogan know full well that it's "the time of monsters" and they can act as they please.
