Man goes to the doctor, says "Doctor, doctor, I've had an uncontrollable urge to sing Barenaked Ladies songs." Doctor says "How long have you had this problem?" Man takes a deep breath.

Depth is in the mind of the reader, just as much as in the conscious mind of the creator (sometimes a lot *more*). But also: you needn’t have based the book on a thorough analysis for it to have proper depth. Meanings and undercurrents tend to sneak in.

Kickstarter pledges being cancelled makes things difficult for small, independent creators. Signal boost again! 3 days to go, and the goal is in sight!

I chatted to the wonderful @mostlymarknixon.bsky.social about Beck's End, the new folk horror audio drama from @shadowsatthedoor.bsky.social . It's a great project with an incredible cast and it's crowdfunding now.

Many people in my feed enjoy horror and audio drama. And I hope some of you might want to support the kickstarter for Beck’s End! It will be produced by @shadowsatthedoor.bsky.social and distributed by @rustyquill.com – and I’m really hoping for it to get made! www.kickstarter.com/projects/330...

This sounds like a good explanation to me. Probably a pretty strong instinct, that – Other People Frightened = Something Is Scary! I've never forgotten that quote from «Peeping Tom»: Do you know what the most frightening thing in the world is? It's *fear*.

I loved Olga Tokarczuk’s “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead”! Among many things, it made me wonder if @tkingfisher.com has read it; it seems like something she would appreciate.

I was trying to read a really very promising-looking recipe for a beautiful cheesecake, but it was impossible to ignore the *disgusting* images for a nail-fungus treatment that kept popping up between paragraphs. Who on earth thought a cooking site was a good place for these ads?

Yes, Swiss scientist Fritz Zwicky coined the term “dark matter” which is impressive, but he also coined the term “spherical bastard” to describe people who are bastards no matter which way you look at them, and I think that should be celebrated more.

I’m very tempted to try finding the limits of your patience in this regard, but that would mean buying a lot of books with increasingly ridiculous requests … so should probably go for “To Anne, and that’s it”.

I am fascinated by «Besides first names, dedications are at the author's discretion.» Does that mean you decide what dedication you will write? (Fully supportive of that, obvs.) Or does it mean that we are trusting in your discretion when it comes to not telling anyone what dedication we asked for?

Sometimes, if something gets extremely popular in the mainstream, the cultural impact means we *do* have to divide the world into before and after. I think those wizard school books deffo fall in that category, as do Game of Thrones and Hunger Games.

Fun! I get that you don't just want «thing I love», but thing we loved is often what defined (or reinvented) the genre *for us*, so it's sometimes hard to distinguish. That said: Monty Python did maybe not reinvent British comedy, but I think they did something new with television as a medium.

Agreed! I wrote a long post fifteen years ago about how we who are not religious create the magic of Christmas and/or the magic of becoming human beings, especially when we have (or see) young children who are growing up close to us. That whole passage was a central part of it.

Sir Terry Pratchett is best understood as one of the most interesting, deeply ethical practical (I would say Pragmatist but I cede to actual experts) philosophers of the late 20th Century who just happened to work in deconstructed fantasy literature as his medium.

I see the “technically it’s ephebophelia” crowd is out today, so just a reminder that A) this is NOT a case where technically correct is the best kind of correct and B) the minute you say this, the gods dump you in the “irredeemable creeper” basket and wash their hands thoroughly after touching you.
