Phone photo (!) taken at Wilpattu NP in Sri Lanka last year, an Asian Open-bill Stork, quite fitting for today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, #BestBeaks, I think. Wholeheartedly recommend #SriLanka as a perfect destination for the mix of culture, wildlife, friendly people, amazing food and great beaches.
Asian Open-billed Stork wading, knee deep, in greenish brown water. The stork is white and black with red legs and a long, thick red-grey bill that - as the name suggests - remains open when it’s closed!

Aren’t the RW press always telling us how much better life was in the 1970s? I’m confused.

No longer a Vestal Virgin! A surprising visitor at the porch light tonight #TeamMoth #Northumberland

Did you know that a Farage Reform govt intends to scrap the NHS? The private health care system he wants to introduce would cost you £10,000s, like the US, where getting ill can bankrupt you. #ReformUK #Labour #GreenParty #Newcastle #SAFC #NUFC

Your time in HE clearly didn’t teach you not to make assumptions. You know nothing of who I am or what I’ve done. And you are of course entitled to any opinion you like, regardless of where you grew up or studied; yes, even a pompous one.

Shut him down? He’s scored 6 goals and had 2 assists against Arsenal in 8 Premier League games. Although I definitely agree, the England team knew him well enough to control him more than most teams in the WC.

I think once black clad men are interfering with rescues at sea, we are past "legitimate concerns". Once they're attacking boats, and risking the lives of everyone on board, it's just thuggery. The Home Secretary's statement is on the side of criminals. There's no other way to read it.

A short thread on “legitimate concerns”. The phrase is used repeatedly by UK government ministers. The Home Secretary is at it again this week. But only ever - as far as I can tell - in one context: people’s response to the arrival of asylum seekers. Please read whole 🧵before responding - thanks

Very little of note in the UV trap last night here in South East #Northumberland but this Red-Green Carpet contrasted well with the wall and a Brown-spot Pinion posed well. #TeamMoth

As for well-trained dogs, can I work out in the 7s I have which is which? No, I almost stop for most dogs, since a minority are not. Don’t get me wrong, every different user has an equal right to the space, but UK cycle infrastructure is shit, prioritising drivers (mostly) & walkers (secondarily)

andrew john lamb @andyjlamb.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Yes, we agree on a lot, here. I’m not denying some cyclists are twats. What I’m saying is that there’s no “just ring your bell, we’ll all be fine” solution here - that you suggested - if/when most pedestrians are not as considerate as you.

andrew john lamb @andyjlamb.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Clearly. But there’s an argument to say, on a shared path, dog owners keep your dog on a short lead, parents keep kids close, take headphones off, walk on the half that’s to walk on (if it’s marked), don’t walk 5 abreast. Otherwise, all the bell-ringing in the world isn’t going to let cyclists cycle

Nearly as many of them as there are cycling idiots. Probably slightly fewer of both than driving “USE THE CYCLE PATH” idiots (when said cycle path is a narrow pavement with 🚲 painted on it every so often). As for good bell, hard-of-hearing/ear-bud-users/people-staring-at-phones don’t hear from 50m

andrew john lamb @andyjlamb.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
While I agree, and I hope that I do, what would you consider “good time”? At 15mph it takes just a few seconds to cover 50m. Does 7s give you long enough? Further away, you likely don’t even hear me, and it becomes an “angry” sounding Ding…Ding…Ding-ding…ding-ding-ding-ding-DING! [Pedestrian scowl]

First #BirdOfTheDay entry for a while, but today’s #ABCD theme is nice and broad! So here’s a posing Arctic Tern on the #FarneIslands a few years back.
An Arctic Tern, a pale grey and white seabird with black cap, red bill and short red legs. The tern is side on, perched on a lichen-and-guano covered dry stone wall, next to a patch of white-flowered bladder campion. The background is a soft focus dark blue sea under a pale blue sky

😂 I was doing my nut last night. Every single time a City player laid even a gentle hand on a Porto player they fell over. We might as well have not bothered with taking corners; I think all but one ended with a FK to Porto 😤
