A good writer said the game was a great 12 hour action game stretched into a 25 hour wannabe god of war ripoff and I think that nails it. The originals were straightforward action games that tested your mastery of a deep and complex combat system. This is that too, but with lots of other bullshit.

All the rote, unfitting hero-speak we get from him the rest of the game never rings true other than this short series of encounters - a dude who lives for a good fight meeting his match in two demons who want the same, and even afterwards, toasting to their next encounter (in hell).

A pair of bosses in particular (two demon brothers, fought separately and then together) highlight every good thing about the game - challenging encounters that grow and amplify, but also the characters hit a rare stride - Musashi is audibly appreciative of worthy opponents, even if they're genma.

...and yet I found every stupid lion dog and did every pointless side quest (spoiler - a group of genma and a rift are behind all of them) because the prospect of getting stronger actually mattered due to how tough the boss fights were.

The tacked on stat upgrades in particular hit a depressing point when you realize the upgrade materials aren't tied to finding specific treasures or tough bosses, but just running around the same area until you have enough leather or fighting the same midboss over and over to get his precious horns.
