I hinted at this in the attached piece and @bretdevereaux.bsky.social has done a great job drawing out even more historical conclusions, but the OP’s point bears repeating: Liberalism is absolutely a military advantage angrystaffofficer.com/2025/02/12/d...

LLMs have been horrific for social trust. I suspect that educators have been on the bleeding edge of the corrosion. The moment LLM papers started appearing it turned every student into a suspect. Is this their writing? Did that comment in class come from chatGPT? Every f—ing minute of the day.

So many wasted years of scholarship by either right-wing authors who saw neo-Ustashi terrorists as tools of the UDBA or left-wing authors who saw them as tools of ASIO. Very few authors (you, Tokic, and some others) treated them as worthy of examination in and of themselves.

Yup and incredibly weak response to an inquiry that took his book seriously and spent years investigating its main arguments to an incredible degree.

Rather than engage with it, Hamish Mcdonald just offers “Had Cavanagh been running Virkez as a source himself? It’s an intriguing thought.”

The report provides plenty of evidence against the claim that Virkez was an agent-provocateur:

And now not even the seemingly strongest case for the false flag theorists has held up.
110
Andrew Zammit @andrewzammit.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Agreed. “This group of six may have been framed, so all attacks over twenty years were false flags” was just a conspiracy theory. I used to always say it was like arguing that the Guildford Four miscarriage of justice proves that the IRA didn’t exist.

Andrew Zammit @andrewzammit.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
I was much more sympathetic to Macdonald's main argument (re the Croatian Six, not his arguments re neo-Ustasha terrorism generally which devolved into denialism) than you were, so kudos to you.
110
Andrew Zammit @andrewzammit.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Hamish Macdonald will be extremely unhappy with that. His central argument has been rejected as not reasonably possible.

Andrew Zammit @andrewzammit.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
"There is no reliable basis upon which the defence case theory in its broadest terms – that Virkez alone, or with the input or at the behest of others, made false allegations against the Croatian Six – can be accepted as reasonably possible."

This is a very thorough and nuanced inquiry that will leave a lot of people on both sides unhappy.

I always thought the idea of Virkez as a YIS agent of influence was quite plausible, given his YIS connections, so I'm surprised that nothing credible has substantiated it after all this time.

Andrew Zammit @andrewzammit.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
See this? "There was no credible and reliable evidence that Virkez was used by the YIS to cause false information to be given to the NSW Police and perhaps ASIO as to the existence of a bombing conspiracy involving the Croatian Six to discredit Croatians in Australia." Page 534 of report Vol 1.

Australia is a liberal democracy and our most important ally’s new National Security Strategy declares liberalism as the enemy. Our national security commentators need to frankly address the challenges that America’s far-right turn poses for our security.

Extremely over-optimistic take. The NSS is unambiguous about prioritising a willingness to interfere in the domestic politics of US allies it accuses of “net zero” ideology, “mass migration” and “suffocating regulation” rather than defend those allies. The Europe-Pacific distinction won’t save us.
