i was fortunate enough to profile Margaret Hamilton in 2019. A really kind and curious person. This was my favorite story she told me:

I have another #buyastrangerabook day offer for you lovely people. @cloakyfat.bsky.social has bought a copy of "The Machine Gunners" by Robert Westall for me to give away. An absolute classic! If you'd like a copy, just get in touch. UK only.
Celebrate 50 years of adventure in Carnegie Medal-winner Robert Westall's compelling first novel for children set during World War Two, with a powerful introduction by Michael Morpurgo. 'Fifty Years on this remains the greatest WW2 novel ever penned.' Phil EarleChas McGill has the second-best collection of war souvenirs in Garmouth but wants it to be the best. When he stumbles across the wreckage of a downed German bomber, he finds the ultimate trophy – a working machine gun.

Hiding his discovery from the local police, Chas recruits his friends and together they build a fortress for their prize. But war is not a game and soon both friendships and loyalties are tested when the gang's actions have dangerous consequences. Robert Westall wrote The Machine Gunners for his son, Christopher, based on his own experiences during the Second World War.

A modern classic of children's fiction, it went on to win the CILIP Carnegie Medal in 1975 and has been in print ever since.

See, perfectly normal hattages, photographed yesterday
A comfortably dressed vole in front of two hattages, one made from a Homburg and one from a top hat. Little windows and doors are evident in both, with the window of the top hat hattage partly open. In the background, hedges and roots show this to be a perfectly normal woodland scene of anthropomorphic creatures living in discarded headgear.

Can you believe online Scrabble won't let me have "hattages"? What else would one call dwellings made from hats for a robin or a vole?
A game of Scrabble with the tiles placed for the word, and it IS a word, "hattages". The word is marked as invalid because of CENSORSHIP. The hattage truth must be told

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

[A parody of MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD, in which the kindly Mr Rogers takes us to see local things in his town.]

1
[title]
MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD

MR ROGERS:

Hi there

2
Today, I’d like to take you to visit some of my neighbours…

[He puts his coat on to leave his house]

3
At a wonderful local event,

[We see the cute toy-town diorama of his village famous from the TV show. The camera pulls out…]

4
The Data Center protest.

[The camera has pulled out further and now we see a huge DATA CENTER at the edge of town].

5
MR ROGERS [joining a crowd protesting outside the Data Center]:

The Data Center is an enormous, windowless, endlessly humming building outside of our town

6
…Which has tripled energy prices, drank all the water, and created four jobs.

7
[to camera, as if kindly explaining to the viewing children]:

Four jobs! Golly!

8
LADY PROTESTOR [probably NAOMI KLEIN, holding a sign]:

In a way, the Data Center is kind of a vivid metaphor for a future we feel locked out of!

9
MR ROGERS [to camera again]:

A metaphor.

10
That’s something that lets us clarify our feelings about something else.

11
LADY PROTESTOR:
How do you feel, Mr Rogers?

MR ROGERS:
I feel like bringing down the government!

12
MR ROGERS [now holding a sign and protesting]:

It’s good to have neighbors.

[ends]

A very small example of the hazards of slop summaries in local history. There were two Fourth Scottish General Hospitals. The WW1 FSGH was located at Stobhill; the WW2 FSGH was located at Buchanan Castle. Slop machine goes ping; hospitals (and wars) conflated. *sigh*
"The Fourth Scottish General Hospital was a First World War military medical facility located at Buchanan Castle near Glasgow, Scotland.
Key Details
• Location: Buchanan Castle, near Stirlingshire/Glasgow area, which served as a major hospital facility during WWI.
• Operation: Active around 1918, it cared for wounded service members, including a significant presence of American personnel and a designated ward for American soldiers during the final stages of the First World War.
• Historical Records: Documented extensively through the [American National Red Cross photograph collection](index:0.6.1, 0.6.15) at the Library of Congress, capturing nurses, patients, and specific wards active during the 1918 influenza pandemic and troop recoveries.
• Archival Plans: Ground and floor plans of the hospital at Buchanan Castle are preserved by the [National Records of Scotland](index:0.6.2, 0.6.10).
Would you like to know more about Buchanan Castle's history or see additional details regarding WWI military hospitals in Scotland?"

Who, Me? was a top secret, sulfurous, non-lethal chemical weapon developed by MIT-graduate Ernest Crocker for the U.S. Office of Strategic Services during World War II.[1][2] Who, Me? smelled strongly of fecal matter, and was issued in pocket atomizers intended to be unobtrusively sprayed on a German officer to humiliate him and, by extension, demoralize the occupying German forces.[3]

Who, Me? had a high concentration of extremely volatile sulfur compounds that were very difficult to control: more often than not, the person who did the spraying also ended up smelling as bad as the one targeted.[4] After two weeks, it was concluded that Who, Me? was a failure.

When I was 11, our first IT lesson at school had us writing a program to play Snakes and Ladders. It rolled all the dice, moved you around the board, and in a fraction of a second you found out who had won. It was incredibly dull. I decided to write a game with actual play instead.

We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.
