Is #PhallusThursday still a thing? This jaunty carving (see image description) ended up as builders' rubble packing the foundations in a third or early fourth century fort of Vindolanda at Hadrian’s Wall. It’s says Secundinus ‘the shitter’ Cacor.
Roughly oblong buff stone with a protruding carved phallus pointing towards the right where the lettering ‘SECUNDINUS CACOR’ has been pecked out of the stone in fairly regular letter cutting. Some of the stone is missing to the right where the letters are weathered away. It is on a white museum case bottom with a dark panel with an unclear out of focus image behind.

I’m sorry, what?! “Salmon are carnivores and eat other fish in the wild, so feeding them chicken is entirely natural,” said an executive at a major salmon-feed producer.” Feeding them humans would be just as “natural” BTW. www.ft.com/content/8f1e...

I want to see the geophys because the article seemed to mix up camps and forts, which admittedly could be down the the journo or sub but am surprised they didn't seek comment from a professional

Very difficult to prove a road is Roman without excavation and recovery of artefacts.

I got a message on Insta about a picture I posted of a late night vets visit and was told what a good book it was and I should pay the messenger to promote it for me!

I was concerned about the assumption, at the very end, that forts face east and the enemy! They're not doing that at all. Would be interesting to know further details on this one. It mentions geophys but doesn't give any details while the excavations seem to have yielded no structures.

Nothing to see here, just a man in love with a carnyx, intending to spend the rest of the afternoon blocking other people from seeing its beauty. The one…the only…Deskford carnyx and stunning reproduction of it in its prime, scaring Romans. #FindsFriday National Museum of Scotland
Me, looking a bit lovelorn, in front of the partially surviving head of a carnyx, a a full sized shiny reproduction

It's #RomanFortThursday and as the summer ends so do most excavations. This pic is of excavating at floor inside Vindolanda in 2013, when it was scorching and baked hard. You can read more about the civilians living at Vindolanda in my new book www.amberley-books.com/discover-boo...
Stones emerge from dusty dry beige dirt. Some are obviously worked, oblong shapes lying in parallel lines. Some look more like rubble.

Honestly, this is madness and a waste of so much talent. Imagine if companies put this much time and effort into unsuccessful tenders. If universities want to think like companies, they need to start acting like them and be far more strategic with their employees time.
