Nothing to see here, just a man in love with a carnyx, intending to spend the rest of the afternoon blocking other people from seeing its beauty. The one…the only…Deskford carnyx and stunning reproduction of it in its prime, scaring Romans. #FindsFriday National Museum of Scotland
Me, looking a bit lovelorn, in front of the partially surviving head of a carnyx, a a full sized shiny reproduction

It's #RomanFortThursday and as the summer ends so do most excavations. This pic is of excavating at floor inside Vindolanda in 2013, when it was scorching and baked hard. You can read more about the civilians living at Vindolanda in my new book www.amberley-books.com/discover-boo...
Stones emerge from dusty dry beige dirt. Some are obviously worked, oblong shapes lying in parallel lines. Some look more like rubble.

Honestly, this is madness and a waste of so much talent. Imagine if companies put this much time and effort into unsuccessful tenders. If universities want to think like companies, they need to start acting like them and be far more strategic with their employees time.

Roman clay hot water bottles in the shape of human body parts used for therapeutic purposes some 2,000 years ago! Found in a building which may have been a healing centre. Paphos Archaeological Museum, Cyprus 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a museum display at Paphos Archaeological Museum of ancient Roman red clay vessels shaped like human body parts each of which has a spout with a handle either side, allowing it to be filled with hot water or oil. The clay walls of the vessels are only 3 mm thick so that heat would be conducted to the body. They are comparable in size to the corresponding human parts of the body including ears, torso, groin, hands, thigh, knee, shin, and feet. They are mounted for the display over a simple outline of a human figure, illustrating their possible therapeutic use around 2,000 years ago.

Awful news about Prof Arday. Whatever he had or hadn’t done, he didn’t deserve the hounding he got from certain non-tabloid papers. With against actual war crimes and the conduct of plenty of politicians going on at the moment, his alleged behaviours were insignificant.
