It’s like one of Parkinson’s Laws: committees will spend hours deciding how to allocate £1,000 on social activities, but a decision on a £1m IT project will go through on the nod because no-one understands it.

All I can think of is, is the boat Free Polish Navy? They did have some small craft, I think. In which case it might be a homemade combination of White Ensign and Polish flag?

Good point. But then we have to consider the havoc generally caused by corporate comms teams when they DO reply to things….

Make of that what you will! I guess I’d just say that it is ok to stop, especially if the experience isn’t working for you, but equally it’s ok to admit you’re struggling, take a break, and then try to find your own way to make it work. The only expectations that matter are your own!

Having been slow the first couple of years - my fault - I had to try to combine writing up with a full time and busy job (thanks pandemic) and found it basically impossible. My sense is that PhDs require very consistent effort, especially the writing, and a busy job just makes that so difficult.

Your description of how you’re feeling is so familiar. I really struggled with my PhD, and ultimately I just couldn’t do it. Comparisons with others will sap your morale so try not to do that! Every PhD journey is unique. Taking a break is a good idea because it’s so relentless otherwise.

There is a takeaway crumble shop in Sheringham. I don’t have a sweet tooth at all, but gawd it’s good. Try it if you visit. Really clever idea.

The way it’s phrased in the Times report, I think it’s highly likely that it’s classified input into the review, rather than classified outputs. I don’t have any inside knowledge, but that’s how it reads, and that would be in line with previous practice over the years.

That’s not unusual. There have been classified parts to every Defence Review, as far as I know - generally the Intelligence assessments etc that describe the threats.

The second step in Adobe’s “cancel my plan” workflow, where they roll over and give you everything for half price, $29.99 vs the rack $59.99 cost

People need to calm down about the Oreshnik missile. (Not about the strike itself, which was barbarous Putin chest-thumping.) It's a medium range ballistic missile. Of course it's faster than the speed of sound because that's what ballistic missiles do. Don't fall for "AMAZING SUPERWEAPON" hype.
