So much love and respect for @gillianbrockell.com , who brought so much detail to this story and testified at our committee. She played a huge part in getting the city to see how bad OMNI was.

I know Rahm Emanuel. I worked with him for years in the Clinton administration, and then when he was Obama’s chief of staff. Rahm Emanuel represents everything that’s been wrong about the Democratic Party for the last 30+ years. Be warned. robertreich.substack.com/p/the-rahm…

Wonder if SBC's reporting has any impact on local politics? Ald. Andre Vasquez (40) used contributing writer James Porter's photo of the Chicago Bike PAC Campaign Trail Party as his FB banner image. 👍 (SBC does not endorse candidates.) chi.streetsblog.org/2026/09/15/b... @andrefor40th.bsky.social

Today, I, along with @daniellaspata.bsky.social and an overwhelming number of our colleagues, introduced the expansion of the Smart Streets pilot! When this passes, the map with be citywide, and it will be an ongoing program, not a pilot! We will also partner with the Mayor’s office to budget it out

Cities have been built out in a car-centric way for decades - so how should government rebalance that and make biking safer? Alderperson Vasquez talked to us about the the city plays in building bike infrastructure so people can get around, and how good communication can help combat frustrations!

Thanks, but if you’ve only got one shift, save it for BRT. Or Data Center moratoriums, or Rank Choice Voting. We need people to get off the couch on this stuff. Especially as it’s more likely to get a yes here than on other parts of town where more organizing is needed

Alder Andre Vasquez, Political Account @andrefor40th.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
We are happy to partner with neighbors to make it happen, but in the absence of actual work? We will just be talking about BRT rather than building the consensus support needed before we even talk about cost. That’s a reality. And we can win it, but it takes work.
010
Alder Andre Vasquez, Political Account @andrefor40th.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
If you want the city to actually do it, the public needs to be in support or they will stop it the way they did Ashland. It wasn’t an implied veto then, it’s what actually happened. If one hopes to see it be more than a concept, the groundwork needs to happen.

A referendum is a process. I guess maybe the question to ask is if you believe that most people would be against a dedicate bus line, and if that’s the case, why one wouldn’t want to work to change that dynamic?
000
Alder Andre Vasquez, Political Account @andrefor40th.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
This is an opportunity to educate, to build coalitions, to talk to neighbors about why BRT is a benefit and improves a public good. That should be an exciting opportunity to build a city for all, center those in need, and build even more coalition.

I think our neighbors can voice where they stand on it, and urbanists shouldn’t take things for granted, they need to organize and actually knock a door once in a while.

Alder Andre Vasquez, Political Account @andrefor40th.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Hmm, we don’t need organizers to provide cover, we need organizers to build movements to cause change rather than to just rage on social media about it. There’s a privilege in urbanist inaction We had multiple public meetings to explain, discuss, and get feedback from neighbors before the upzoning.

If it held more weight, things would be moving more quickly, no? Meanwhile city referendums on rank choice voting get blocked at city council. We put questions on the ballot to organize and move things forward. In order to make things reality, we need people taking action.

The answer to the question is no, the city of chicago doesn’t have an environmental policy, it has a newly reconstituted Department of Environment that is beginning to develop a structure.

The ballot question is more of a way to get our urbanist homies to do more than rage on social or drink at bars and talk shop. It gets them to talk to their neighbors about the benefits of BRT. That way the public doesn’t kill it on western the way they did on Ashland. A win helps put it on record.

Alder Andre Vasquez, Political Account @andrefor40th.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Huh? Check the date, it’s from 2024. It wasn’t getting them to support a referendum. It was getting the to support CTA to move forward with studies to get it done. It’s what in part led to 6 streets in the city being the focus for BRT by CTA.

When BRT was attempted on Ashland, it was neighbors that shut it down. We have done plenty of work to inform neighbors in the ward, but we want to make sure neighbors are talking to each other to move this forward citywide. This also is a great way to get urbanists to take action and organize

Asking people what they think isn’t “doing what the mob wants”. It’s literally listening to the constituents one serves to get their perspectives. I know that’s a difficult concept to consider as we see how many instead choose to just align with their inner circles and ignore differing opinions.

A referendum also makes support a matter of record, not of assumption, and not one that would stand the test should someone else be in this seat after
