Frankie is back home, as expected in the tiniest urn they had. I miss her dearly. But it hasn't hurt like I expected. There was no shock of sudden departure. We had three and a half months to say goodbye, for me to grieve as she gradually slipped away and process it with my friends and therapist.

We've kept finding ways to eat and drink, buying time and comfort. But the ticking bomb with Frankie's tongue cancer is it will eventually block her breathing. I have no tricks for that. By now prolonging her life risks some other painful breakdown of her overtaxed 19 year old body.

Frankie's not gone just yet. She took to syringe feeding with gusto. We sit face to face and I deposit dollops of food into her mouth. Saturday night she declined food after several days in bed. Sunday morning she was jumping up her cat tree. Her birthdate is "June" so I say she's made it to 19.

Albums from when I was 16 that I personally consider perfect. See the alt text for each. 1986 was a year when 80's music sped off a cliff. Still some great heights but mostly momentum, with an abyss of cringe below. Even great artists were calcifying into soft rock for department store soundtracks.

Paul Simon's "Graceland", a shared breakthrough from oppression, heartbreak, and artist's block

They Might Be Giant's debut Pink Album, kicking off 40 years of undiminished greatness, a capsule of why two kids in Brooklyn immediately won ardent fans.

Janet Jackson's "Control" is the decisive There Is Another for the Jacksons. One Jackson would not be eclipsed by or compared to Michael. The debut of a survivor in it for the long game.

Billy Joel's "The Bridge" was perfect if you were a Billy Joel fan. The last album and tour (which I saw!) with his original band, the songs are a culmination of his work since Piano Man, both looking back and letting go. Utterly satisfying the way Storm Front was not.

ST:TNG should have used Nilo Rodis' concept art for Romulans from The Search For Spock. Originally the Bird Of Prey crew were Romulan with Edward James Olmos as Kruge. The TNG Romulans would have been spared those bowl cuts and silver quilted pointy shoulder pads. And probably a lot less cranky.
