"I'm going to have nightmares about giant crabs in the trees tonight" -- one of my players, shortly after the party was ambushed by giant flesh-seeking tree crabs really what more can a DM ask for?

hmm my sister has opinions about the sea peoples and bronze age collapse, this is rather new let no one say the Odyssey movie has done nothing for classical reception

MEOWMEOWMEOWing at the cat and randomly poking her belly in the middle of her nap so she knows what it's like when SHE does it at 4am. (She tolerates these attentions with amused disdain and a yawn, i.e. better than I do hers.)

I really liked Project Hail Mary. It's nice to watch a movie that isn't afraid of asking big scary questions but also doesn't take itself super seriously while doing so.

I think I remember writing this papyrus in a past life.

A 3rd century papyrus conjugating γράφω in the indicative
Here is a truly fascinating item.  It's a leaf of papyrus from Oxyrhynchus.  On it, someone has drawn out a table of the forms of the Greek verb γράφω ("I write")! Here's a splendid image of the verso...

- Basil of Caesarea, Homily on the Rich v. loose translation: "not even a river of wealth is enough to satisfy a woman" reading the patristics is so entertaining sometimes 🙃

I just think it's funny a professor of classics and translator of ancient greek is a controversial celebrity now. She's kinda that Indiana Jones archetype.

well, I didn't intend to spend today in Minneapolis, but it *is* nice to be in a civilized city every so often. (civilized: walk into a random coffee shop & they either have a flat white on the menu or aren't shook when ya ask for one)

I wonder if one of the reasons all the churches I've attended have been extremely politically diverse is b/c calvinistic baptists are such a weird mixture of traditions. You get the whole spectrum from theonomy thru normal 'murican church-state distinctions all the way to straight-up anabaptists.

I think one of the things I find most difficult to grok about the past is the default level of exposure to and acceptance of violence. Even when it's bounded by customs and relations: duels, corporal punishment (both penal and toward children), infanticide, slavery, fights, etc.

so roman numerals were too much, but greek numbers were fine? suuuuure
screenshot of a scanned latin-greek parallel text - an excerpt from migne's patrologica graeca series, athanasius's letter to markellinus on the interpretation of psalms. a directory of where to find different themes of psalms: the latin side uses arabic numerals but the greek side uses greek numbers

Also, citations of citations are the worst, why do editors permit them? Why do I have to do your job?! (I’m reading this purportedly scientifically informed book somebody recommended Jimmy and I’m not having a Good Time.)

may the pillows of paper-authors who don’t wayback their online sources always be warm The point of a citation is that I can track it down. If it’s literally impossible to do that six years later, you have Failed at your job.

I don't mind people having strong opinions (Lor knows I've got my own), but there's a certain "everyone who disagrees with me is either stupid, uninformed, negligent, or evil" attitude that immediately makes me lose 95% of my respect for someone.

I wish I understood cat language better. I can generally recognize "want food" "want pets" "want play" "excited" "VERY excited" but there is also a meow that is definitely a request for something that I can't interpret. Are you hot? cold? angry? bored? it's like trying to understand a crying infant.

"complicated spreadsheets" "making sure different teams around the company have the same numbers and the right information they need to make decisions" skill issue if you can't understand that tbh, my least technical & oldest family all understand more-or-less what I do & why #dataengineering
