Me from a few years ago getting brutally called out wtf
four-panel cartoon comic featuring two simplified humanoid characters, one purple and one pink.

Panel 1: The purple character sits slouched and sad, saying, "Nothing interests me." The pink character stands nearby, listening.

Panel 2: The pink character sits beside the purple one and says encouragingly, "Surely there's something out there for you."

Panel 3: The two sit together in front of a door labeled "EXPENSIVE AND TIME-CONSUMING HOBBY."

Panel 4: A wild-eyed, sweaty pink version of the hobby bursts out of the door with arms wide, grinning. The purple character, now looking uneasy, says, "Not that."

One of the "no shit Sherlock" moment is how a profit-driven system of capital accumulation eventually entails taking advantage of the monopolistic power of states as the effective means to maximise profits & concentrate wealth, for some reason many economists seem to ignore this

The questions we ought to be asking is not "will AI become smart enough take our jobs?" but rather "what does it say about the nature of contemporary employment that the same tasks can be performed by a machine with no self-awareness, needs, interests, and concerns?"

There're genuinely difficult questions about how this relates to traditional religion (being the political party of Reddit Atheists would be, for various reasons, bad) but some kinda "know it when I see it" ability to rule out this stuff is vital.

I still am not sure why Erik Olin Wright didn't see the relevance of dialectics in social science when his major contribution is his empirical study on a category he called "contradictory class location". Analytical Marxists are doing dialectics while dismissing it in words? @benburgis.bsky.social

Seems pretty pertinent, I wonder what Hudson thinks of Varoufakis' thesis of the death of Capitalism and the rise of "Techno-Feudalism". My own view is Varoufakis (and many leftists) underestimate the role of rent in (advanced) financial Capitalism.

Looking at the tariff debate and I reckon it's excellent that we managed to preserve normative theory in polisci, and that we still think about the fact-value distinction. Economists make moral & political judgments and pretend they're just scientific predictions, or mix predictions and politics.

"The Stoics adopt the Socratic idea that virtue is a mode of knowledge or expertise, that it is one or unified, and that it determines happiness or its opposite, as maintained by Socrates in Plato’s Gorgias, a text cited repeatedly by Epictetus, for instance."

A certain kinda person really thinks macho vibes are what make for military success, and so thinks liberal states are bad at war. But rationalised logistics and immense productive capacity are actually very good at winning wars and liberal capitalist societies can martial those well and quickly.
