This picture says 1000 words about my sense of humor
four panel screenshots of the LOTR movie. top left shows serious face leslie neilson wearing the crown of Elrond and sitting on his throne text says "ive figured out a way to destroy the ring" second panel is a pensive looking boromir text: what is it. thrid panel is the entire middle section. it shows a close up photo of the one ring and text under it: it's that little round gold thing over there. fourth panel, also a full width one, once again, leslie-elrond-neilson text: but that's not important right now"

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com
As we join the great theoretical scientist, he is deep in thought. So still, quiet and focused that he might almost be asleep. But inside that brilliant mind, what new idea is forming? What certainty is being meticulously interrogated? What ingenious theory is ready to change our world forever? (the scientist snores lightly) Ah, it seems he actually is asleep. And that's fine. Science is hard and not every day can be a success. We will come back another time.

The vagueness probably comes from (a) the scientist being unsure and not having the tools to think in terms of scenarios and (b) the rest of the community working for hypemen like Altman who have no incentive to be intellectually rigorous.

In precision machining it’s known that the standard twist drill makes holes that are never perfectly round nor perfectly sized. When exactness is required you drill slightly undersized then follow up with a reamer. Needing 10.000mm I drilled 9.9 and chucked a 10mm reamer. Instead of taking tiny […]

Who, Me? was a top secret, sulfurous, non-lethal chemical weapon developed by MIT-graduate Ernest Crocker for the U.S. Office of Strategic Services during World War II.[1][2] Who, Me? smelled strongly of fecal matter, and was issued in pocket atomizers intended to be unobtrusively sprayed on a German officer to humiliate him and, by extension, demoralize the occupying German forces.[3]

Who, Me? had a high concentration of extremely volatile sulfur compounds that were very difficult to control: more often than not, the person who did the spraying also ended up smelling as bad as the one targeted.[4] After two weeks, it was concluded that Who, Me? was a failure.

Two side by side photos of a spider on a leaf or some cracked pale green surface.

the spider's belly and head are visible, and there are black dots and a red curve arranged like a smile emoji on the thorax? idk the belly bit. looks like a dude with tiny belly and huge head standing with his hands up in the air and harms swinging around, maybe dancing.

the major design flaw of toothbrushes is that its easy to forget which brush yours is, and while it's probably ok to use the toothbrush of someone in your household once in a while, it's still kinda gross. The colors are all too similar, the handles are all the same, and color alone is not a […]

I really would like an answer for fucks' sake.
A tweet, and 2 comments on the tweet

Tweet: Quick question: is it for "for fucks sake" or "for fuck sake". it's for a work email so it has to sound professional. (dated 1/27/2020)

Comment1: Neither: it's "for fuck's sake" the sake is on behalf of the fuck, so you need a possessive. Get yourself together, this is a workplace.

comment2 : As many have pointed out, it should have an apostrophe to show possessive. The REAL question is whether it should be "for fuck's sake" or "for fucks' sake". Is it for the sake of ALL the fucks or just this fuck in particular?

Of late I've been wondering if language models are just a programming language that is fiuzzy. I do not seem to get good results when i treat it like it's an encyclopedia, or an 'agent' for most parts, the most useful things are a natural language interface / UI language. #AI

[Photo of Snek] Today's find on reddit: Western Ghats King Cobra (Ophiophagus kaalinga) Enlarge the image to see up close. BEAUTIFUL Photo by: www.reddit.com/user/partographer #Snek
Photograph of a jungle path. The brown, well-trodden path is lined with leaves and scattered rocks, taking up about two-thirds of the frame as it gently snakes from the lower-left corner toward the upper right. Lush grass lines both sides of the path. About two-thirds of the way up, a snake emerges from the right strip of grass onto the path. Approximately one foot of its body is visible with a low head position. Its dorsal surface is black with yellow or orange markings along the belly. The snake features large eyes and its tongue is extended out toward the camera. The camera looks like it is about 4-5 feet from the snake.
