When I testified to the US Senate a few years ago, I said a lot of this, too. AL will never expand Medicaid. Rural hospitals closing everywhere. Medicaid cuts hurt rural Rs the most. I think lawmakers count on that subgroup not voting, not being able to vote, or voting against their self interest.

I built a clinic for people with serious 🫁 disease who little to no insurance. This week, I spent tons of time after clinic to get a Medicaid prior auth approved for 1 inhaler that has kept my patient with COPD stable. I’ll go through the gauntlet for my patients, but why do I have to?!

My family has worked primary care in the Deep South for decades & as a pulmonologist I help historically disadvantaged populations with lung disease. Our area is the buckle of every chronic disease belt & converging racial/socioeconomic disparities & glaring gaps in healthcare access. It’s tough.

Sad state of affairs. Medicaid expansion makes sense, pays for itself, is pro-business, & can save the lives of so many in rural AL where I’m from, where 64 of 67 counties are “ambulance deserts”, & hospitals have closed at alarming rates. Nah, let’s spend a billion $ on a mega prison instead. 🤦🏽‍♂️
