Just read @katemanne.bsky.social ‘s fantastic piece in The Cut about the Cornell rape and she points out that students protesting conditions in Gaza were treated more harshly than the rapists and holy shit, this detail
One of these students was my own advisee, and having supported her throughout the the months-long case, I can state with confidence that she did nothing wrong. Moreover, she happens to be deaf and was suspended in part for being “unreasonably loud.” Privacy consideration

Day before first class of the fall. I have a firm AI policy (none), but so does the college at which I teach (literally: “more!”) I don’t think anyone outside education fully appreciates how quickly this has overwhelmed… everything. I’m excited to teach again, but I also already feel… very sad.

I read something recently quoting Miyazaki's hatred of the Hollywood narrative of fighting evil by killing villains. He is so right on. Killing an individual doesn't fix the system that gave rise to that individual. Our conventional narratives are so "we just need a good guy to kill the bad guys"

I've never seen a major publication do this before, 3 paragraphs lifted, word for word from FT and copy-pasted into The Times of London. Was The Times acquired by a hedge fund intent on bankrupting it so they don't bother with attribution anymore?

Why was Dolly able to do all these things? Because BMI (and ASCAP) protect songwriter’s rights and songwriters are paid royalties for everything. Dolly never sold her immense catalog of songs and it made her a 9-figure fortune.

If the criticism is "why don't journalists write about X?" the answers usually are: -a word count limit of 600 or less -a publishing quota deterring longer stories -an editor shot down the pitch or cut that detail or angle -a beat reporter was laid off -freelance rates of $250 to $350
